I think Highlander is quite right in that regard - I don't believe that money is the sole reason for the lack of passion and pride.
Your average fan, I think, has a greater love, pride, passion etc. for his country than many of the premier league players chosen to represent England - regardless of personal wealth.
I did, however, enjoy the pride and passion England ladies showed during their games. They were kicked harder and longer than their male counterparts and I saw no rolling around like they'd been shot in the leg.
The 1966 players had one key thing in common (actually more than one but that's a different tack altogether) - essentially that they were proud to represent England.
Broadening it to other sports including tennis, athletics, cricket - I wonder just how much "national pride" even enters the heads of many of them.
