Title: Where Should the Next UK City of Culture Be?
Post by: Scunner on November 04, 2013, 19:00:28 PM
The next (2017) UK City of culture will be decided this month. But which one has the culture required to have such a prestigious designation?

I would not vote for non of the above, as I have not been to some of them.  I wonder how many people who voted for non have actually been to all the Cities?

I have been to all of them, several times, and I didn't even vote :D

I think it has gone from places of culture to places that could use a bit of a boost. It should be places like Harrogate, St. Andrews and Bath, instead it is Hull and Leicester. I used to work for a Hull based company and was there almost every week - and I didn't witness much that I would term as culture.

I didn't Kev, my great loss I know. Actually, I worked with the guy who won Stars in Their Eyes as Chris de Burgh. In Hull. Not in Prescott's league I do realise.

Prescott became Lord Prescott in recognition of his efforts to raise the profile of lunchtime "legovers".
His wife became Lady Pauline as a reward for putting up with the obscene hypocrite.

I won't have that! It has some of the most skilful Glue Sniffers I have ever seen! They didn't even stop or try and hide the cans as two policemen strolled by on the other side of the street! I mean John Prescott lives there, what more can you want? Eeee - lets 'ear it fer 'Ull or --- perhaps lets not!

I seem to remember some nice wooden green phone boxes
when I visited Hull but i'm not sure that would be enough to swing it.

Yes, I can remember those too when I used  to visit a friend from Hull many years ago.  Seem to think they had their own phone system, totally separate from the rest of the country.  Not sure how it worked and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!   :)

Green wooden phone boxes and a Stars in Their Eyes winner? It has to be Hull really.

The secret weapon being white metal telephone boxes -- and yes only Kingston Communications (Formerly Hull Telephone Company) are allowed to operate in Hull, not BT or anyone else! But then --- who would want to?  :)

Well how about Glasgow, very old City, centre of commerce for Europe in the 1500's, has theatres, Galleries, Opera, more inventions than you can name, great artists etc,?

Title: Re: Where Should the Next UK City of Culture Be?
Post by: johntaylor49 on November 07, 2013, 12:58:43 PM
To be honest Worsley has a lot of history actually rather than Culture. There would have been no serious Industrial Revolution without it! The Dulke of Bridgewater realising to fuel the Revolution needed a way of transporting Coal, plus of course becoming very rich as he owned Coal mines  :) .

He personally went to Parliament to demonstrate that if Canals were constructed and lined with Clay the water wouldn't run away as they believed, permission was given to build the Bridgewater Canal from his coal mines (inside and underground where the ground rose believe it or not) by James Brindley. Canals grew across the UK to transport goods and coal to the Industries. Bridgewater Canal was then  linked to the Manchester Ship Canal and coal exported!  It was said you could travel from inside a mine in Worsley to America never having to set foot on dry land!

Not to mention the Market clock in Walkden used to strike 13 times at 1 pm to ensure office staff heard it above the noise from the nearby Ellesmere Colliery and Workshops and were not late back from Lunch.

Anyway, personally and frankly I couldn't give a flying **** about "City of Culture" really, more Eurocrap in my book  :)

There's no real funding for culture anymore since Cameron and Clegg got in.

La Guillotine Pour Nicolas, was completed within 6 months of the coalition coming to fruition.

Le Gros Marteau Pour David is still under construction. There have been several re-designs.

Bon!

I do prefer madame guillotine to the gallows, but don't stand too near, complete ruined my new revolutionary
roccade, all splattered last time, do you think we could encourage "tony" to come by and include him in the action????   :)

Barnsley man's dog dies and he takes it to the sculptor and says he wants a gold plated statue making of him, the
Sculptor asks "do you want it 18ct? " the man replies "Nay, ya daft booger, chewin on't bone!"

Nah then!

Hull !

Just shows you what we know, It polled 0.00%

Good luck to Hull, it was a head office for a company I worked at for many years. I hope they embrace the Capital of Culture year, it really helpe transform Liverpool from the last option on the CBF poll to what is now a major European tourist destination and cruise terminal.
Title: Re: Where Should the Next UK City of Culture Be?
Post by: Menthol on November 20, 2013, 09:25:00 AM
Having been to Liverpool the year before its transformation and having not yet returned, I must take everyone's word for the vast improvement. It cant have been hard to improve to be honest.

The first and only time I visited Hull was 7 years ago when we provided roadie transport for our sons' gig there. Me and TA didn't see any of the gig as we were too scared to leave the car unattended. We sat in it surrounded by a gang of yobs who sat on it and spat on it. We kept driving off and returning. The 'gang' would re-emerge from buildings and shrubbery like undead zombies.

Delightful place. Can't wait to return.

We should ask our resident 'City Hull' member Steve Marshall to give us a local's (codhead's) appraisal of his home city (of culture).

Most people in Hull think that culture's what you get if your milk goes past it's sell by date.

Very strange, should have been Dundee, they are are changing things so much there and the City is looking good. I think the powers that be thought Hull was struggling and needed the help more than Dundee.
Title: Re: Where Should the Next UK City of Culture Be?
Post by: Scunner on November 20, 2013, 18:40:35 PM
Knowing all four I would agree that Dundee is way ahead of the rest. A lot of investment is taking place, maybe once it is completed they will have a good chance of winning.

But I still think it has nothing at all to do with culture. It's a leg up opportunity for places that really need it.
Title: Re: Where Should the Next UK City of Culture Be?
Post by: KKOB on November 20, 2013, 19:20:04 PM
Yeah, it was a close call between Dundee and Hull apparently. Both of 'em are full of people who can't speak English but Hull won it because they're less likely to vote for independence.

Honest opinion? Who cares where it is ? it is still spending money that we don't have on something we don't need whichever way you look at it!

Another "Euromadness" exercise!

Does the unemployed electrician nearing retirement whose small private pension has been destroyed
by a wunch of bankers and a Government of overpaid greedy self effacing nondescript t****rs care about
his City being labelled as a "city of Culture"??
