On behalf of the country. Their arrogance towards the Ghurkas is secondary to their arrogance in the face of public opinion. They don't need to lose many votes to lose many marginal seats at the general election, and this single act of total disregard for the opinion of the people will translate into enough votes to lose the majority of them.

When will Governments learn that they can't ignore public opinion if they want to remain in Government? It's hardly rocket science.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told MPs she was "proud to offer this country's welcome to all who have served in the brigade of Gurkhas".

:o   That`s not what she said last week.

To pull the two stories together, I calculated (from available estimates) the the cost to the UK of allowing a Gurkha family to reside in the UK for a year is way less than one moat cleaning.

Back in context I believe.

Sad but true Scunner. But what a great outcome. In a matter of a few weeks people power has got the politicians and whitehall on the retreat. It looks like the gravy train has hit the buffers and a large number of its passengers will have to disembark at the next election. :) :)
