Title: Dingwall flooding
Post by: badger on December 09, 2011, 21:23:50 PM
heard today on radio 2's weather report of severe flooding in Dingwall

Hope John & Brenda are on dry land - and our other north of the border  members are not badly affected

This should probably not be in this section but.  We are in Aberdeenshire. We had very high winds yesterday. The Christmas lights in Aberdeen blew down, My son's fiancee was told she was going hone in the afternoon because 2 windows in her office blew in. Lots of trees and masonry falling down, schools closed, roads closed.  We had no power last night from 9.30pm until 3.30pm today and the temperature was 3 degrees below...

Getting back on topic ;).....

Thanks for your concern badger, the present Mrs H and I are perfectly safe. In fact we got off relatively lightly compared to the Western Isles where thousands are still without electricity which must be just awful.

We are approximately 800 ft above sea level but even that didn't stop our insurance company claiming we were on a flood plane :o.

PS  :)KKOB and thanks for the alert earlier

PPS Dingwall on radio 2 - who would have thought.

Our power went off again last night at midnight and came back this morning at 8.00am but then went off half an hour later.  It has been going on and off ever since. Apparently there are still 29,000 houses in Scotland (and not just in the Western Isles) still with no power including a lot in Aberdeenshire.  We also have about 2 inches of snow this morning and it's freezing cold.   I rang Scottish Power this morning and mentioned our neighbour who is 70 years old has had two heart attacks and pneumonia.  They said they had provision to put vunerable people from big Cities in Hotels if their power was off but did not have provision for people in country areas. When I told the guy that the neighbour was in his kitchen with just two gas rings for heat, he asked me did I have his number, yes, I said and was about to give the guy the number, well, said the guy can you ring him and check he is O.K. and let him know that there will be an update for the area at 13.00hrs.

Hi Jacqui, Sorry to hear about your neighbour.  Have you asked Social Services if they have anything in place.  There should be an out of hours service for the area.  He will have to give you permission to phone them.

Thanks for that Heather, but he is fine, we have been in touch this morning and the heating is back on and hopefully will stay on, but who knows.  It's very kind of you to give me these details and I will make a note of them in case I need them in future.

My hubby is in the garden right now, picking up the matchsticks that WAS our fence. Hurrcane "Bawbag". as it's been dubbed, completely decimated it.
It was my home town of Helensburgh that the BBC news covered and I've never seen anything like it.
I drove along the seafront earlier in the day to get photos of the giant waves and then tried again later, but seafront was flooded.
I'm by no means a lightweight and I was getting blown away by the wind! That's a no mean feat, but it was so difficult to try and stand still or walk at my owm pace.
Hey ho, it's winter in Scotland and the upside of that is, there's plenty snow on them there hills. Skis waxed, thermals looked all and ready to go!!!
