Due to circumstances beyond our control the Craft Fayre for later this month is having to be cancelled. Below is a statement regarding this.
FIG Craft Fairs Explained
Since we started our bi-monthly fairs all those years ago, behind the Migros car park on the sea front between the Address Restaurant and the Childrens Park, they have always been held in the last week of January, March, May, July, September and November.
This is the only place we are allowed to hold our fairs, the dates being arranged with the Zabita once a year. We are also completely dependant on the weather! This winter especially we have experinced some very unpredictable weather, always strangely enough when it was our craft fair week.
Unfortunately we cannot just say on a Monday “ Oh goodness its looks like rain tomorrow, we will have to change it to Wednesday” and then contact everyone. Before we could contact our stallholders and advertisers we would have to consult The Zabita, find out if tables & chairs are available that day, and above all find a minimum of 4 people to run the fair, and often those volunteers have planned their week around the original date.
“Why not arrange for some tenting to cover the area just in case?” you may ask. It is impossible here in Fethiye to hire enough tenting to cover the complete area we use and we cannot expect stallholders to risk their stock becoming rain sodden, nor potential customers come to that.
In May, the International Music Festival, the Kaya Fest together with the highly succesful 3C’s Spring Fair were all held in the 10 days immediately before our fair on the 26th and we feel these may be the reasons for FIG only attracting a few stallholders. As a charity, we cannot afford to make monetary losses, and consequently we very reluctantly decided to cancel the May Craft Fair - not a decision taken lightly.
We apologise to those wonderful supporters who look forward to our craft fairs, where we think we consistantly showcase, not just once but throughout the whole year, marvellous craftwork, handcrafted by very talented people. Most particularly we apologise to those stallholders who had responded positively to our initial planned fair.
Atogether it is not an easy task to run even our relatively small Craft Fair.
