Title: Garanti bank...
Post by: Elsa Padfield on August 25, 2013, 08:22:34 AM
Advice please....we sold our apartment 2 years ago and have money still in the Garanti bank in a high interest account. We thought - stupidly it turns out, that we could transfer online from this account to the debit/current account. It seems we can't, and due to unforeseen circumstances we haven't been able to visit to move the money from one account to the other.

My question is, does anyone know whether we have to go to our branch (Fethiye) only to transfer the money from one account to the other, or can we go somewhere else in Turkey? Yes, I have emailed the branch several times but no response. I've also rang Garanti in London and was told that I had to go to turkey to do this.

If someone has the answer, thank you so much. There's not an enormous amount there but it'd be nice to get our hands on it.

You can fax/email the branch with transfer instructions. You don't need to go to any branch. Alper (Banker on here) is very helpful, you can message him via the forum.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Is it a time deposit account? If so you should be able to move your money on the day that the interest is due/paid.

If the account is a 30 day account then this will fall on the same day every month if not then the day/date changes every month so you will need to check on line to see when the interest is paid.

You should be able to move as much as you want if it is staying in the same bank but if not most banks have a limit on how much can be moved at any one time on the same day unless you make an arrangement with them.

Yes it is a 30 day account but because I didn't ask at the branch to allow me to transfer online it won't let me.

telephone Alper or email him and ask him to take the trigger off which rolls your account over each month, then on your interest day set the new account up online and this allows you to move money about. Don't just look at monthly if you keep putting numbers in the daily I found 1/2% more for 32 day account.

Ok, not at home till later this week (dog sitting in Hull whilst daughters on honeymoon) so I'll have to give it a go when we get home. Still not quite sure how to.  In easy to follow language, I have to check the date of the interest, when that's due, I set up another online account and transfer the money over. If it was that easy, why won't it let me transfer it to my debit account?  I don't know. It's so much easier with NatWest online banking!  I have messaged Alper so I'll keep checking my emails to see what he suggests too but thanks for the advice and I'll give it a go.

Garanti was I found the worst for blocking you from your own account and moving money without written permission in advance.

I had to make three separate trips to Fethiye to sign something - one to allow me to view my own money in my own account online, then another to allow me to move money from one account to another and another to up the minuscule limit imposed on the amount that could be moved.

That is what I got for trying to open and set up an account online and for that too I had to make a trip to Fethiye in the end; that makes four trips.

Maybe it would have been different if I had opened it in person in the branch.

Ok, so I may have to visit Fethiye? What a pain......  ;)

The return flights are expensive right now. I think we'll probably get a single, fly to Istanbul and then go home via gatwick instead of Bristol. A roundabout way of saving a couple of hundred pounds I suppose.  Thanks.

Well maybe not Elsa if you can get someone in the bank to respond to your emails or fax. I didn't have access to a fax machine at home so I had to go into town.

If you access your account there should be the name of your personal account manager top right with the option to email. If you haven't tried sending an email this way yet it may be worth trying.

Good luck   :)

I haven't tried emailing this way. I didn't know there was a name. I'll give it a go, thanks a lot.

Thank you everyone for your input.  As you log in, there is an option to contact someone to deal with your request. Problem is, they're only there to help with loans or mortgages so no help with my problem.  I did fax a request as instructed on Sunday and as of this evening, nothing has been done. I have sent a copy of the fax by 'snail mail' also. Is that going to help? Who knows? Getting frustrated with it all now. There's not that much in the account and by the time I've bought 2 flights and accommodation and food etc I'm out of pocket although we'll have a lovely time.

This would only work if you had the ability / scanner to scan the handwritten document to your computer though.

Hi, yes done all that, faxed, emailed and now sent a copy of the fax via snail mail signed! Checked the account this morning and still nothing! You'd think it wasn't my money. Perhaps they're waiting till its the correct date which is next week? Dunno

 >:( just an update..... I received messages from the banker, followed the instructions by faxing....I downloaded an app, paid and sent a fax...twice. I followed this up by sending signed fax by 'snail mail'. Nothing!  I emailed head office, the expat dept. Still no reply. I've more or less emptied the current account using my ATM card here in the UK but still the other money sits in a timed interest account and I can't, even on the maturity date, move it and no one seems to respond to the emails or correspondence.  I've tried to phone this morning but can't get through on the numbers from the website.  So, if anyone else has any other thoughts please let me know. Thanks.

I sent funds from my Garanti GBP account to a UK account last week using the Internet banking service. You can sell or buy foreign exchange on your Garanti account online. Can't you sell lira in the high interest account for pounds and then transfer those pounds to your UK account?

Reading this post made me so mad. I have/had an account with garanti and they were a nightmare to deal with. The last time I was in the bank I waited 40 minutes with just 1 person ahead of me in the queue so when it was my turn I withdrew all my cash and went to ING bank. Just as bad, it took me 18 months to get at the money I deposited because they were sending pin numbers to the wrong phone number. I beg and pleaded with a certain forum member to check the number they were texting was correct as I was not receiving the pin, head office investigated and couldnt find a problem!! Eventually a young lady in ING asked was this my number and lo and behold it wasn,t !! So on to finans bank, no money in the account because I am still waiting for my pin to activate my debit card and internet account. Hubby has his so its not as if they wont activate the account without a deposit. Banks grrr!! great when you put your money in, not so if you want it out.

I moved my money from Garant to the HSBC and find them great. I have waited 2 hours in a queue at Garanti more than once! Turks seem to take priority there.

We moved from Garanti many years back now, we simply got fed up with the excessive q's and the fact that simple things were so difficult to execute.  Moved to HSBC and TEB whilst neither of these are perfect, they are both streets ahead of Garanti in terms of customer satisfaction.

I moved to Garanti from Finnans and Teb because of poor customer service and low savings rates. I went to Garanti today went upstairs said hi to Alper her gave me a ticket for the speedy queue only waited 3 mins.

Garanti has stood us well for over 10years, and this week with the help of Alper excelled the customers services, he collected us from one bank with money and ensured us safe venture to his office.

The only downfall I have experienced with Garanti is when the password is lost or not working when in the UK, but again thanks to Alper and the young lady next to his office (sorry I forget her name) it eventually gets sorted.   ;D

Try TEB been there 3 years after using Finans no problem put you bank card in the machine get your number never been in more than 15 mins. If you dont have a bank card you get a number but you are always at the back of the que bank customers come first

Can't get at the money because I think I have to go into the branch to authorise Internet access on the timed interest account. This doesn't help when we're not in turkey and haven't got the time to get  there, and also, if I'm honest, it's going to cost to go over, sort out the bank and get back. Perhaps that's what they're hoping? :/

hi i had this problem. i phoned and email and it was like a parrot speaking etc. so what i had to do online was close my deposit online, the money goes into your lira account. then in my case, then transfer to sterling, then transfer to uk. i even tried faxing my signature etc by going into hsbc in uk to send to fethiye. their fax line was always engaged, they had it on constant for 2 days!!! all safe and sound now and i have managed to do this twice now. good luck.

Can you not send a signed fax (or scanned, signed letter by email) requesting that the money in the account be transferred to [IBAN NUMBER] - i.e. to a bank where you can access it and move/withdraw it? I'm sure Alper could arrange that for you.

Thanks, I have sent a signed fax, in fact 2 were sent. I also sent one of these as hard copy using the postal service. I've emailed, messaged through this site, emailed head office and on the website under the contact section, I've sent messages. Thanks though. Not a good advertisement for Garanti Bank though is it.

Elsa, which Branch of Garanti are you with, and what is the name of the person looking after your accounts?

The branch is the main one in Fethiye. Haven't any idea who looks after it. I thought it was the bank?

The one near to paspatur or the one on the Migros road?  just asking as got conflicting information, where did you originally open the account Paspatur or Migros?

Paspatur, but have used the one on the migros road to withdraw money or credit the account.

When we initially opened the account it was the one nearly opposite what was Carefore but then changed to a small migros on the seafront.
