Air con smells of what?
« on: August 18, 2014, 21:25:53 PM »
How can I put this delicately.....one of our aircon units is pumping out air that smells of p*ss!

I first thought it may have been that we have our toddler and the hand in hand issue of wet nappies I the room but having vacated the room of everything baby and fully aired, the smell comes back.

I am assuming some kind bacteria in the system?

So...anyone experienced this and any quick fixes, or do I need to call an engineer.

It may be something electrical overheating.  Insulation and plastic can sometimes smell like that if it is subjected to heat.

Possible blocked drain pipe, so any water vapor may collect within the unit.

Definitely call out an engineer. Check and clean the top filters if necessary and also wipe with damp cloth the filters underneath. You may have blocked pipes and these may need to be cleaned out by an engineer. You may also need the gas sorted and again the engineer can do this.

And Steve please bear in mind that if it is bacteria enjoying the internals of your aircon, it generally isn't a good sign.

Also worth switching them on and getting the Hoover nozzle in to give a good clean before wiping all surfaces down with anti bacterial or vinegar in water

Have you had it serviced yet Steve - would be interested to know what was causing the smell.

Ok.....so the smell has/had nearly gone. So today I purchased some spray anti bacterial cleaner, turned off the electricity, removed the air con cover and then carefully hoovered the fins (without touching them with any pressure as they bend easily). After this I sprayed a generous amount of Anti Bac on the fins, the filter and around the bottom of the unit. I left it an hour or so to dry.

No more smell....
