I don't know if this has already been posted - if it has I couldn't find it.
I was in the Duck Pond Restaurant on Thursday evening and mentioned to the owner that I hadn't seen Hagi (the shoe shine man) around whilst I have been over this time. He told me that he (Hagi) had been sent to jail two weeks ago having been found guily of a charge of molesting young boys. This was confirmed to me later by a waiter and also by the taxi driver who took me home. He did say that he didn't give Hagi much chance of survival in jail because of the nature of the offence and that fact that he was a Kurd.
-
That is terrible news, we always used to speak to Hagi and I remember a piece in paper about his daughter getting married. Difficult to comment as we don't know any of the details. I did hear that he ran the boys with the scales, but don't know how true that was. I never saw him with any boys.

Cannot think of anything to say

Me neither...started typing about 4 times.

Could molesting mean slapping the kids round ear.??
-
I doubt there is anyone on here who knows the answer to that Kevin. I would think molestation might be a bit more than a clip round the ear though.
-
I was told today that people in the area are aware of this. I was also told he had 20 children...Now that was a shock.
-
Although not quite on the scale of Hagi's alleged crimes, I find it quite disconcerting that someone openly admits to patronising the Duck Pond restaurant.

-
Shocking....
-
After all the glowing references of the guy on the Forum perhaps we should hear both sides, members of the jury. :)
-
You would assume someone with a far deeper understanding of the Turkish legal system than us has heard both sides Kevin
-
Nothing like a bit of speculation to fill a no-news day.
-
It looks like the members of the Turkish Jury did make a decision.
However, have to agree with John, what on earth was someone doing eating at the Duck Pond!!!!
-
The Turkish Legal System should be discussed in the Jokes section. ;)
-
Have been told that Hagi was arrested, is in custody but I don't think the trial has taken place yet. Would be very quick under any countries system, never mind Turkey's...... I don't think it was just a case of a clip round the ear, but this is up to the judge to decide. Not sure about the truth of 20 children either, would probably take that with a pinch of salt. He originally came from Kars in NE Turkey and used to return there each winter, but believe he had stayed locally for a couple of years.
As for not being safe in prison because he is Kurdish, think he will have some company there.
-
Now if only he worked with shoe box's instead of shoes eh.
-
I heard the 20 children from a Turkish friend in Fethiye who knows Hagi. Perhaps he has been boasting.
-
The news as I heard it from three separate sources was that he was arrested some time ago and held in custody until his trial which took place just over two weeks ago. He was found guilty of the charges and sent to prison. No-one that I spoke to seemed to know what the length of his sentence was. The taxi driver told me that if he was ever seen in Fethiye in the future then he "would be given a free pair of concrete boots and taken for a boat trip" (and I quote).
I was told he had 9 children of his own.
I wasn't eating at the Duck Pond Jacqui - just meeting up with friends. I have eaten at the Duck Pond in the past and found the food to be no better but certainly no worse than most of the restaurants in Fethiye, althought I will admit that it's on the pricey side. ;)
Kevin - please feel free to visit Hagi and then you can relate both sides of the story to the rest of us.

Steve J
I'll leave stories to others mate.
-
Is Hagi the guy who always wears the football shirt? [cant remember which team]
-
Yes.

The original Hagi was a famous Romanian who playedf for Galatasaray
SteveJ you are probably too new to remember the long thread about the Duck Pond and the cruetly to the ducks and also the fact that the pigeons flew in and out of the kitchen.
-
I don't want to continue this "off topic" but the Duck Pond thread was in July 2011 and in my opinion is not relevant to "Some shocking news".

In case anyone wants to know more about Hagi. This piece was in the local press two years ago.

He deserves all he gets.. Let's not sympathize with him..
-
Well said Ann
-
Has his trial taken place yet.?
-
Kevin,
As reported at the start of this thread I was told that he was sent to jail two weeks prior to my meeting at The Duck Pond so I'm fairly sure that even in Turkey they don't go to jail before having a trial. ;)

Unless they are Gulenists.
-
Or he's on remand awaiting trial

If you read the post by Lissa he is in custody but she doesn't think his trial would have taken place this quickly.
It would seem you know better.
-
I have heard from a friend this morning who lives in Fethiye that Hagi is dead, killed by other prisoners in jail.
-
That is awful for his family. I have an ancient pair of boat shoes that we would laugh about. Told him I would throw them in the harbour rather than shine them. Very sad news.
-
Shocking news whatever he did or didn't do RIP So this is what happens in Turkish prisons!
-
It happens worldwide. Good places to keep out of. !!

-
In all the time we've known of Hagi, I've never heard any rumours or talk of him behaving inappropriately then in the space of a few weeks we hear of child abuse and then death. I do hope it's all exaggerated or better, just not true.
-
Unfortunately the child abuse is true.. no confirmation from other sources as to whether he died in prison or not..

I had no personal knowledge of the eventswhich took place but simply reported what I had been told by two sources who I believed to be reliable. It would seem that they did indeed know better. ;)
-
Yes, Stevie, the people I know also knew about this around the first time you reported it. I also have no doubt they, as people who live and work in Fethiye would not be telling me something if it were not true.
-
Steve J
You pulled me for asking if his trial had taken place. Can you answer my question.??
When people are taken into custody prior to trial where do you think they keep them.??
-
.............as people who live and work in Fethiye would not be telling me something if it were not true.
Really ?
-
Strangely for some, who love to make mischief in fact they wallow in it ....... Yes. >:(
-
Have been told that a rumour circulated in Fethiye a while ago, about Hagi being killed, but now told it is not true.
-
Facebook, that paragon of truth and certitude strikes again...

I hope they are on the good side, Inspector. But seriously, thanks for supplying some information to this thread.
-
And reliable information at that.
I think we need to be careful about passing on third hand information especially about upsetting news ;)
-
Inspector
Thank you for taking the time to find out the facts. Very much appreciated. ;)
Trial by media eh.!
-
I posted the information that I was given by two seperate Turkish people who I believed. I was told that the trial had taken place two weeks before and he had received a guilty verdit. My apologies if (as it now seems) the information that I was given was not 100% accurate. My thanks to Inspector for the "insider" news and clarification.
-
Ooooh - my 1,000th post ;D

Really ?
KKOB, your much needed word of caution gained you an insult. Well, it was intended as an insult I believe; you may have taken it as praise!

Am I Bovver'd ? ;)

Rumours circulating again - guess where ?
-
Seen it,either old news or it's recently happened
-
Saw it too. Wondered if it was old rumours doing the rounds again. Some people have too much time on their hands! :o
