I'm a bit of a Christmas "Grinch", I dislike the materialism and excess, but I love the spirit, pretty lights and the emotions and memories inspired by some of the music, here are some of my favourites;
Bing & Bowie - Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy.

Mike Oldfield - In Dulce Jubilo.

Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York

John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over).
*Warning* some powerful images in this video, but it's the message of the song !

Peace be with us all - Merry Christmas

Pogues/Kirsty for me too as an all time favourite - I like most but fed up of I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day, it grates me in recent years. Also Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry and as a guilty pleasure, old Shakin Stevens with his Merry Christmas Everyone :)

This is less well known than some of those above.

Me too the Pogues :D
and I love 'Silent Night'

I love all the classic seventies Xmas songs, Happy Xmas War is over, Step into Xmas, Stop the cavalry, Slade's Merry Christmas Everyone, but the one that comes out on top is I wish it could be Christmas everyday by Wizzard .. a perfect pop song on so many levels.:D:D

One thing I pondered today - when you look at the Christmas compilations (and there are many), the 'core' is always the same tracks. Now I have no problem with that, but what is quite evident is that nobody has really added a classic that makes it into all the collections for years, even decades. You can go right back to the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s and each decade added a few to the mix.
What was the last Christmas classic to truly join?

The Darkness - Christmas Time, was possibly the last one worthy of going onto a compilation in years to come- I love ALL christmas songs and this year I extended my already ridiculously large collection with a 6 CD compilation from the Book man at work for £2.50 and then Nick bought me the Carpenters Christmas Collection CD. Like I say I love christmas songs.

Pogues and Kirtsy for me. I had it for a ringtone on my phone for years. I love going round the shops when the songs are on ..it would bring a tear to a glass eye...4 sleeps to go:D

I genuinely thought The Darkness was a joke or send up when I first saw them (actually I now think I was right!).

I also liked this as a brilliant song, which bucked the trend as a Christmas No. 1 in December 2003 - nothing to do with Christmas but beating the rest of the seasonal contenders to the coveted top spot purely by it's quality !, the cover of Tears For Fears Mad World by composer Gary Jules (great video also !). :)

The first Band Aid single does it for me especially when Bono belted out 'and tonight thank God its them instead of you'!!!!!!John Lennons Merry Xmas War is over comes a close second.

How could I forget Frankie !

Earlier in the week TOTP2 was on TV (please excuse acronyms). It reminded me. Is there any more vomit-inducing Christmas song than Paul McArtney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" (apart from anything by Cliff Richard)?
P.S. John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" is pretty gut-churning as well, but not as bad as his former writing partner's effort.
