Title: Extra Router Ports...?
Post by: Scunner on November 20, 2013, 00:10:52 AM
I'm no expert on this sort of thing so here's the question: :D

I am with Virgin Media for t'internet and have their Superhub which has 4 ports to plug things into it - like Sky, PS3, network drive etc. All good. But if I need to plug in more than 4 things is it possible? If it was USB I'd use one port to connect a USB hub to it - is this the same sort of thing?

Thanks, in anticipation of some super answers  ;)

I am assuming the Superhub is or is like a router. If so you should be able to plug a network hub or network switch into it which does the same as your USB hub. I have one plugged in my sky router for the telly, sky etc
You can buy them fairly cheaply (I guess if your t'internet is quick you may want to splash the cash a bit for a fast one though)

This one will do nicely TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Desktop Switch (http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG1005D-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Desktop/dp/B000N99BBC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1384939509&sr=8-2&keywords=4+port+switch).  Use this model with Virgin to connect TV, media streamer, sat box etc.  Its fit and forget.

That TP Link will do the job nicely, use them myself.  And if you want or would like to locate the switch somewhere else in the house so it is nearer devices or perhaps better located, and avoid the need for messy cables trailing over the place, use these babies.

There are non power pass through models available too, but generally you find you want to use the power sockets for the switch or router!!
