Title: Meis
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on August 11, 2016, 17:05:32 PM
I see Fethiye Lovers advertising trips to Meis.  Looks like a nice place and only takes 20 minutes on the ferry.  I remember years ago ex-pat members used to go to Meis so they could come back to get their passports  stamped. (Don't really remember what that was all about, before anyone asks).
My question is, is it worth a trip over?  Would anyone stay the night? Or is it just a day trip place.  I know we could drive down to Kas ourselves and get the ferry over.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it worth a trip over but I don't think there's enough to see to make it worthwhile stopping overnight, unless you want to take time to go on a boat trip or swim out to the blue caves.

Bear in mind the currency is Euros and the restaurants are quite a bit more expensive than, for example, Rhodes. Everything is brought in by the twice-weekly ferry from Rhodes, or one of the ferries from Kas.

I challenge you to climb the 400 odd steps up to the plateau and back again.  ;) If you do it, you've got to post pictures of the view from the top as proof.

I did it once with a friend who was getting her visa stamped before she ran out of her allowed days. It was a lovely day, the very smiley man running the ferry gave us all a glass of wine. We had a nice meal at one of the little places around the bay. Then a nice walk and look around. As KKOB says probably not enough to stay over. The afternoon was enough for me though it'd be nice perhaps to break the journey and stay over in Kas for a day or 2. M and I always thought we might do that on one of our stays in Kas.

There's only one road on the island and that goes up past the Army Garrison, the ruins of Castle Rosso which dates back to the Knights Templar and the crusades, and ends on the plateau at the airport. Well worth the effort for the views of the south side of the island.

That would have been Selo. He got well and truly stuffed as they changed the residency rules just a few weeks after he'd bought his new ferry.

Thanks for that folks. Very kind of you and much appreciated.   We have a friend in Calis who has stayed at a fabulous place in Kas, so perhaps we may have a couple of days there and a trip over to Meis.
Not sure about all the steps though KKOB.  I do go to the gym a couple of times a week, but it is nice and cool in there.

There's only one road on Meis. It climbs steadily past the Army Garrison, Castle Rosso which dates back to the times of the Knights Templar and the Crusades and then ends at the airport. It's worth taking a stroll up it for the views of the south of the island.

There are several little chapels that are worth seeing and the basillica, if it's open, is definitely worth a visit.

That's a periscope. They were holding the submarine world championships there. Unfortunately they had to cancel them half-way through because of the rain. It was a washout.  ;)

Well worth a visit we have done it many times and love the laid back Greek lifestyle. We have at least one greek day a year in Meis and stayed over a couple of years, again it is something I would recomend  as it becomes a different place again in the nighttime.  Very quiet with just  a few little restaurants  on the harbour front and with virtually no  light pollution the night sky is pretty impressive.....

This sounds an interesting place, can someone give me more information, like how do we get there from calis or Fethiye, which direction is it, and is it only Euros they take over there.

Sounds lovely at night Philrose, I can imagine it, it's so pretty, it reminded me of a miniature Simi. That might be nice idea for a special romantic occasion Jacqui!   ;) 8)

The only problem is driving on that winding road to Kas, not the best road and we were amazed at people trying to overtake on bends.  We drove around a corner and a lorry was coming towards us and suddenly we were face to face with a car on our side of the road trying to overtake the lorry.  Never seen Phil hit the brakes so hard.
He said at the time, better to be following a few other cars along the road, than be in front.
However, we will bite the bullet as we now quite fancy a trip to Meis.  We also have some Euros left over from our holiday a couple of weeks ago.
One other question, can we buy tickets there for the Ferry or best to get them from Fethiye Lovers?

You can get a bus to Kas from Fethiye, or hire a car or better still if there are a few of you book a people carrier with a driver (it worked out about £10 a head return last year), we have also spent a night in Kas and did the trip the next day. We normally phone the ferry company ahead so he knows we are coming and then pay at the office. The crossing takes around 30-40 minutes and although there is a small bank and ATM on the island we have always taken euros with us. You have to be at the ferry office by 9:30 am so they can do the passport formalities, they depart at 10:00 and return at 16:00.
Oh and don't forget to take your passport.....

They like you to be at the ticket office with passports by 9.30am.
We find it nicer to stay overnight in Kas and book tickets etc the night before.
The trip is lovely, very scenic but very little to do.
A few hours is more than enough time for a nice lunch, stroll and get some bacon & duty free.

Things are hotting up in the waters around Kastellorizo / Meis with Turkish and Greek naval ships patrolling the area.

You're in Turkey. Ahval is banned there. You'll need to access it via a VPN.

Here's the article for you.

Frigates from the Greek and Turkish navies were patrolling around a small Greek island just off the coast of Turkey on Thursday as a dispute over territory simmered.

The Turkish vessel was stationed between the resort town of Kaş and the Mediterranean island of Kastellorizo, which lies 2 kilometres off southern Turkey, according to a video published by the Yeni Şafak newspaper on social media.

The ship belonging to the Greek navy was patrolling on the opposite, south side of the tiny island, which is 6 kilometres long.

The militaries of the two countries almost clashed over Kastellorizo in late July. The Greek army called a state of emergency and fighter jets were readied after Turkey sent a seismic research vessel to the area to conduct hydrocarbon exploration and a fleet of its warships neared.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel intervened to prevent an escalation, holding phone calls with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The island, which is known as Meis in Turkey, has belonged to Greece since 1947. It is flanked by two Turkish peninsulas to the east and west, as well as Kaş and a range of Turkish mountains to the north.

U.S. President Donald Trump held separate phone calls with Erdoğan and Mitsotakis on Wednesday, urging the two leaders to resolve the standoff through negotiation. Greece argues that its islands are part of its continental shelf, while Turkey says it has its own sovereign sea rights.

Both countries are accusing each other of intransigence and provocation.

Kastellorizo, with its tiny, historic harbour town and Ottoman mosque, is usually a popular tourist attraction for people visiting Kaş and the surrounding area. It is part of Greece's Rhodes region.
Small ferry boats make regular trips to and from the island. The service appeared to be suspended on Thursday, according to the ferry operator’s website. An annual swimming event is also held across the same stretch of water.

Ankara rejects any "illegal changes" to the status of Kastellorizo, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Sunday, following news footage showing Greek soldiers disembarking from a ferry to the island on Friday.

As Turkey’s Oruç Reis research vessel approaches the Greek island of Kastellorizo, amid fears that the next navigational advisory, or Navtex, issued by Turkey will bring it even closer, Athens is adamant that it will not start talks with Ankara until the Oruç Reis and its accompanying warships withdraw from the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek battleships have encircled Kastellorizo, the island at the centre of a territorial dispute with Turkey, and several uninhabited islets to shield Greek territory against Turkish attempts to survey for hydrocarbons, according to Greek media.
