Title: Electric scooters
Post by: Highlander on June 01, 2019, 19:28:42 PM
Are electric scooters "legally" allow on the prom.

Having push bikes booming down the prom was causing enough of a problem.

I've read elsewhere that signs have gone up along the prom saying that no bikes, scooters, or motorised vehicles are allowed on the prom now. Lets see if it's adhered to. The rule has been made in light of the ever increasing  "mobility" scooters going along the prom, often at fairly fast speeds.

It's ridiculous that they are allowed toky .

I don't have a problem with people who are genuinely disabled and/or unable to get about easily using mobility scooters to get about along the prom. But it's the obviously able bodied, often quite young, people tearing up and down in these electric scooters who are a bl****y nuisance. Not sure how well it's going to be policed but hope something comes from it.

I totally agree with Marina but from personal experience, not ALL disabilities are visible.  It would be a great shame if Calis resembled Benidorm which has been overrun with disability vehicles.  I suppose the only way to prove disability, would be to carry something to prove it.

As of yesterday all scooters, bikes, electric vehicles and pushbikes are banned...
Apparently there are cameras and they are stopping people and handing out fines....

We have noticed  'few' cycles being pushed along the prom,  but just I  the last minute a motor scooter has gone along and one of the 3 wheel things that are being hired out, don't know whether they are just ignoring the sign or just didn't see it.  Last night near Lees bar,  a man was on one of the 3 wheel scooters and had no idea how to ride it and was bumping into the grass kerb, people were a ski g him to get off.  Whilst writing this another two bikes have hone past !

Afraid thats the problem. Putting up signs is all very well but without officers there constantly to enforce the rules it's fairly pointless....

Agree Phil, just walked the length of The Prom this morning and we were passed by 15 cyclists, 4 madge -mobiles and 2 scooters.  :(

Our friends over in Calis heard that there is a small police ? office/ room  just opened up near MODO on the prom anyone know of this ?...…. if its true it will help with these new rules and be a local  point of contact for any other issues people may have

Good decision but have to be applied by authorities . A teenager on an electric bike hit to my arm in promenade and escaped. This happened in winter time when promenade was not crowded. Danger is much more when it is crowded.

Agree cenk. There's an accident just waiting to happen with more and more of these scooters about. I hope I'm wrong but dread to think what it will be like in the height of the summer.

Well, whilst I appreciate that there are people with scooters, electric 3 wheelers and even some cyclists who ride dangerously on the prom, I have to say a gentle cycle ride down the front is one of the things I have enjoyed about Calis over the years.

I dont believe I have ever put anyone in danger and have always given way to pedestians. I also dont ride on the front when it is busy and we are usually ony there at quieter times of the year anyway.

I guess it just means instead of cycling down the front for breakfast or lunch we will stay local up near Sunset Beach.

Just watched two men cycle up to the sign, advising no cycling, read it and then cycled back down the prom ?!

IanK, I can sympathise with people like yourselves who cycle responsibly. I don't have as much of a problem with the majority of cyclists, it's the electric scooters who are the biggest problem, and the people who are allowed to ride them! Some of them have no consideration for people just enjoying a walk along the prom, which is a great pity   :(

Fethiye created the blue cycle lane along the Corden. It's probably one of the safest places to walk. It's dangerous on the prom. Bycylists, powered cycles and scooterists on the prom. Their quiet and unobtrusive until they run you over. It's interesting to note that the authorities in Amsterdam are having similar issues.     Powered vehicles should be on the road. Bycylists in the cycle lane.

Taken from elsewhere-
A bit of advice for our readers regarding electric scooters and bikes.

On some of the local Facebook pages a lot of misinformation is being posted on comments that the 3 wheel electric scooters available to hire are disability scooters, you don't need a licence, in the UK you can use them, etc etc.

This is NOT the UK, the road traffic laws here are different.

They state that any electric moped or scooter with an output of over 250W requires to be registered with the local police, (i.e, a number plate is required), they must have traffic sigorta, (insurance), the rider must have a valid driving licence and they must wear a helmet.

From traffic police website ” Article 3 Definitions of Road Traffic Law No. 2918, electric bikes with power over 250W are accepted as motor bikes. Accordingly, electric bikes larger than 250W must be registered, have Trafic Sigorta [3rd party insurance]

if the power is from 250 Watts to 4 Kilowatts you need a Class ‘M Licence. if power is over 4 Kilowatts Class A Licence is required.

For your information, the 3 wheel scooters which are popular with the rental companies are all around 800W output with a top speed of approximately 50kmph meaning they must be registered and comply with what is stated above.

if you are registered as disabled you have to provide proof, if you reside here and class yourself as disabled, you need a hospital report that lists your disability and the percentage of your disability. if you want to have a Turkish driving licence you need another report to ascertain that your disability does not impede on your driving.

if you insist on mis-quoting UK regulations, they are in fact as follows:-

Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs come in 2 categories:
Class 2 invalid carriages’ - these cannot be used on the road (except where there is not a pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4mph

Class 3 invalid carriages’ - these can be used on the road, and have a maximum speed of 4mph off the road, and 8mph on the road.

But this is NOT the UK and therefore not applicable. For your own well being and safety please abide by Turkish laws and regulations.

Hi all , not posted for ages :-)  So can you use a rented scooter/trike on the prom if genuinely disabled?

It's a great shame that the many are being punished for the few that do cause a problem, we have been in Calis since 2005 and have enjoyed countless cycle rides along the prom on our tandem with no problems at all. Please do not paint all cyclists with the same brush, perhaps a warden to stop and fine people that do ride without consideration for others would be better than a total ban so people can enjoy the Calis that we all have over the years and for many more to come.

I think the bottom line on this is if genuinely disabled riding a disability/mobility scooter which does max speed of 8mph there is no problem.Anything else is not allowed.
Whilst it is lovely to cycle along the prom as we have done many times ,it is no longer permissible. Therefore people can get off their bikes and push them for this short distance which we did recently. It is not a hardship, there is a fantastic dedicated cycle path locally which still allows amazing views. The warden idea is not good, this is a footpath not a road,it is illegal to ride a pedal cycle on a footpath in the U.K. so shouldn’t be an issue here.It is like ignoring a one way or no entry sign which you just would not do.
Title: Re: Electric scooters
Post by: Christie on June 21, 2019, 19:06:43 PM
Totally agree with Steve A comments.  Whilst we were there recently we had to treat the promenade as a road,  as we had cycles, electric scooters, normal motor scooters,  plus those dopey small scooter type things.  Nearly got hit twice,  simply because we moved slightly to look at a menu.  People drive/cycle along the prom at speed, it is dangerous and according to the FOUR signs where you enter the prom advising all of this is banned.   There is a road running along the back of all the restaurants,  so really there is no need for cycles,  electric cycles etc to be on the prom, other, of course,  from people with disabilities who need this transport.  Wish people would have more respect.

I’ve witnessed countless numbers of people on cycles, mobility scooters, electric scooters and the like going up and down the beach road, day and night and tonight for the first time, I saw the police but they never stopped anyone.  The prohibitive signs must be hidden away as I haven’t seen any.

There are three, albeit small round signs, attached to the bollards and a larger freestanding sign placed right in the middle as you enter the prom, the cyclists etc have to drive round it !  There are also two larger signs at the start of the prom near the Mutlu hotel.

Saw more than one Bradley Wiggins impersonators bedecked in multi coloured lycra flying past the sign at the bridge.

I bet you any money they know fine what the new rules are but choose to ignore them.

Most establishments don't have signs relating to the smoking regulations but most people know them through social media

I walked part of the front with my bike last week  - was passed by 6 cyclists and 5 electric bikes/scooters and 2 regular electric scttters.

I was told 2 different versions of how the regulations are being policed by various people (not officials)....

They dont check
They only check after 7pm

Riding down the back road is not much fun :(

Cannot understand why the no cycles/motor cycles/scooters rule along the prom cannot be adhered to.  It is a promenade and it is dangerous to have so much traffic going along  there, when it is specifically BANNED.   It might not be much fun cycling along the back road but it is not much fun avoiding being run into and hurt by cycles etc that should not be there.
Title: Re: Electric scooters
Post by: saoirse on August 19, 2019, 14:43:21 PM
In defence of those using electric bicycles it is an efficient and green way to travel short distances and can be very convenient for some without the full expense of a car especially for local shopping etc

Of course walkways like the seafront should be prohibited to any vehicular traffic but it is somewhat confusing as to where electric bicycles are actually allowed

I presume they are not allowed on pavements or walkways but are they allowed on the roads, cycle lanes etc?

Until theres proper signage and information as to where they ARE allowed the problem of them being in inappropriate locations will persist
Title: Re: Electric scooters
Post by: Christie on August 19, 2019, 17:12:21 PM
Think there are  pictures on the signs banning cycles/scooters etc at the entrance to the prom, but they appear to be ignored.  Presumably the 3 wheel type electric scooters are to be used on the road ?  When we were walking to Fethiye a cyclist was taking a photo of one of the 3 wheel scooters using the cycle path, and telling the driver that he shouldn't be on the cycle path. Don't know whether that is correct or not, but can only assume if they shouldn't be on the promenade or the cycle paths then that really only leaves the road.
