Drive to Elamali and Kalkan
« on: August 29, 2009, 07:11:35 AM »
Drove up to Elmali for a look at the town yesterday. Took the Antalya road from Fethiye. Turned off for Seki (lot of electricity poles being erected there). We went straight through the village past the big apple statue and headed up the mountain to Elmali. The road took us up and the views over the valley  plateau and mountains the other side were beautiful. We descended the other side of the mountain and passed through a fertile valley where there were poplar trees, willows and the crops included sunflowers, tomatoes and apples. A concrete raised water channel follows the road. We saw donkeys being used to carry firewood and there were baby donkeys wandering along grazing.

Elamli itself is a mixture of old and new. There are two beautiful mosques which were very busy as it was a Friday and Ramazan. The shopping street has many shops with jewellers, clothes, material, car tyres and lots of other things. In the main street there are plenty of places to eat and some lovely gardens with fountains where you can have drinks. Water runs through a stone channel in one garden resaurant opposite the largest mosque. It was very shady under the trees.

We then left Elmali on the Finike road the other end of the town and headed towards Kalkan. Lots of apple orchards and miles of space! As we started to climb again we passed a sign for Combe and on the right was a huge dam. The water reflected blue from the sky and the area surrounding it is covered in pine forests. We drove through a small village and were stopped by a Turkish man called Ali and he asked us for a lift to Fethiye as his father in law had just had a operation and was in hospital there! Seems to be a normal thing here to give a lift! We followed the road through more pine forests and small villages to descend into Kalkan where the panoramic view over Kalkan in fantastic. Worth a visit there. The D400 coast road starts again here and we followed the coast road back to Fethiye which is also a pretty ride. If you want to visit Patara beach there is a turning off to the beach on this road. It is a journey that can easily be done in a day.

We did the same drive as yourselves a couple of years back, our journey took the full day; so dinner in Kalkan. Subject to which road you choose, you can also go to Kas, naturally this is a longer trip.

For those who wish to go to the Ski "resort", turn right at the "Apple"; the "resort" is signed about 30 minutes up hill.

If you have never had a chance to look at some of the interior, I suggest you consider this; do ensure that you are fully fueled. 8)
