Title: First visit
Post by: nick11 on March 10, 2013, 11:13:36 AM
We will be coming out on out first visit to our new apartment in Gunlukbasi in a couple of weeks. Even though the place is furnished there are some things we need to get. Namely crockery and cutlery and other bit and pieces for the kitchen. Also, pillows, sheets etc for the spare room. Is there anywhere locally, or are we better going into Fethiye. Also, any recommendation of goods shops for this sort of thing would be appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation.

For crockery, cutlery & kitchen stuff, Iyim in Fethiye is an Aladdin's cave. It's about half way between Tuesday market & the footbridge on the LHS as you go into Fethiye.

For bedding, I bought locally & then found that everything needed ironing, so have since replaced with stuff I bought in the UK

Agreed on the bedding - get easy care/non-iron in the UK from somewhere like Primark/Matalan. The shop Liz suggests is excellent and also see what the big supermarkets have - Migros, Kipa etc.

And finally, for the dull stuff like buckets and mops, you can't beat the Tuesday/Sunday markets.

There are one or two shops on the Gunlukbasi 'High Street' that also have crockery and mops etc

Loz & I ALWAYS use the shops on the main street in Gunlukbasi,, for household items, mops, buckets, light bulbs , etc. They tend to be cheaper than the big markets, and really friendly to deal with.
Gunlukbasi is a wonderful shopping experience, enjoy your new apartment.   ;) :D

Certainly is, when we are over Mrs Scunner always goes to her old hairdresser and I walk for hours up and down Gunlukbasi high street just having a mooch and seeing Turkey in action.

We spend loads of time up there sitting in Seckin watching the world to by.

Thanks again everybody for your help. I must admit sitting in Seckin, which I take it is a local bar, sounds more appealing than the shopping.

Not at all - sitting in somewhere like Seckin is appealing but shopping to kit out a property in Turkey can be great fun too. You'll probably end up with several tales to tell  :)

I agree with everyone else about the bedding.  We bought some from a shop in Gunlukbasi when we first bought our apartment.  It was great fun as the guy couldn't speak a word of English and thought we were asking for "sh*ts" instead of sheets!  We eventually got what we wanted, but, one wash, and they were a mass of creases that just would not iron out.  Take some with you from Dunelm - good quality and don't need ironing!

The Gunlukbasi road has a "cheap shop" that sells everything from hair colours, to screws and nails, to buckets and mops, to pans and cutlery!  You can get everything you need in there and it'll probably be within walking distance for you.  He will also negotiate a price if you buy a few things.  Can't remember what its called but it's not far from the police station, but on the other side of the road.

As Scunner says, the markets are also good for household things, and very cheap.  Enjoy your shopping and your new apartment!  :)

Kitting out your new place is a fantastic experience,Gunlukbasi high street is as much of an experience. We love it and you can get everything known to man on your doorstep. The "million" shop in Fethiye is also good for cheap bits n pieces,Eren spot in Fethiye for white goods, electronics and furniture.Seckin is one of many lokantas in Gunlukbasi where you can get good local food at reasonable prices,a great place to watch Turkey in action.

Exactly - and for God's sake don't pay any "personal shoppers" - get out there, find your own shops, do your own deals, make your own mistakes, create your own hilarious stories of misunderstandings and fall onto your own settee laughing about it  :)

Thanks again for the advice. I am sure there will be mistakes and misunderstandings but, as you say, that is all part of the fun. Really looking forward to it.

The Tues market had some good quality white porcelain crockery.  Large dinner plates 4TL, but said I could have them for 3.5TL, bowls 3TL and tea plates 3TL

Great advice here, and agree with what has been said about furnishing your apartment as part of the overall purchasing experience, we had great fun, exploring the various establishments (whilst making a few mistakes along the way  ??? ), but generally a fun time, best of luck and enjoy !   :)

I once bought one of those floor squeegee things and had everyone nodding and laughing on the Dolmus.
Still don't know why?

I am intrigued.....why would a squeegee cause such laughter?
