Favourite boxer, past or present and why? How would they compare to other boxers in their own weight category past or present.
My favourites..
Rocky Marciano
Joe Louis
Marvin Haglar
sugar ray Robinson
Sugar ray Leonard
Mike Tyson
Azuma Nelson
Jeff Fennik
To name a few but not particularly in that order.
-
Only 1.....ALI[^]
Don't need to explain further.
-
Eric..Tyson vs Ali both at best! Who would win and why?
Marciano Vs Ali both at best who would win? Why?
-
Ali to win, he would duck and weave and wear tyson down, just like he did with Foreman. Marciano??? before my time so will pass on that one.
-
Iv watched the foreman fight maybe 20 odd times and still its not even in my top 50 fights. Ali was king of hype and duped the world and really sold this fight. He was over weight and way past his best, but what an acheivement to beat Forman as he was an animal at the time. There have been many upsets in boxing over the years. The fight itself was not a classic, just the result was unexpected by all boxing pundits at the time. When foreman became the oldest heavyweight in history by beating Michael Moorer, again not exciting but made history. Marciano wouldnt make heavyweight these days but when Ali was smaller that would have been a classic.
-
Henry Cooper. He was not all mouth like so many of the others.
-
Ooh Boxing is such a horrible sport in my opinion, but must agree with Tom , Henry Cooper was a lovely man
-
Tommy Farr.
-
I think Tyson at his best would have beaten Ali.The reason is this Ali had his hardest fights against Joe Frazier .Remember joe broke his jaw.Tyson was a similer fighter to Frazier but a bigger puncher.I also think in his prime Tyson threw more leather.
-
Ah but, Tyson beat Ali once 'cos he was over confident. Ali then beat Frazier twice!
-
I'm with you Eric. ALI.Not called The Greatest just by himself either.Enough said.
-
Surely the greatest were Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed the amount of punches those two took unbelievable.:D ;)
-
i think ali was the best he danced like a butterfly and stung like a bee.
even after a lay off because he refused to soldier on,
rocky marciano great, but i think ali would have been to fast for him,
-
Ali, The Greatest Boxer Ever. :) :)
-
Marciano beat Ali. Didnt you all see it? Ali kept knocking off rockys wig. Rocky got angry and said if you do that again i will kill you. Ali said even way after he gave up boxing Rocky had an unbelievable punch. Ali was great but not the Greatest as he would say to all. My case.....Apart from Frazier and Forman who did Ali beat who we would consider a great fighter thus putting Ali as the greatest? if you look at the lower divisions many fighters could claim to be the best ever after having brawls and fighting worthy contenders. What about the 80s light/middleweight and middleweight? Duran, Leonard,Hagler and a few other fighter in this weight that were awesome in their own right. These fighter fought each other more than once and had skill, endurance, technical skill and hearts of gold . They alway fought the best. Ali fought a few bums, actually quite a few. just my opinion sorry. To name a few more worthy contenders, Joe louis fought everyone in his time and ruled for years, Tyson youngest heavyweight knocked down most and he was half the size, Azuma Nelson, tiny but amazing skill and unbeatable, oscar dela hoya, champion at many different weights and fought all the best fighters(no bums) etc etc etc. We had some good British fighters also.
-
Ali also said after one fight with frazier it was the closest thing to dying. And i think Tyson was a much tougher fighter than Frazier.

Yeah, but he wasn't half the boxer 8)
Surprised Joe Calzaghe hasn't been mentioned [?]
-
Calzaghe was good, damn good. Would loved to have seen him fight Bernard Hopkins when he was at his peak. Also Roy Jones Jnr again a candidate for the best fighter ever. Unstoppable when in his prime. Moved weights and beat everyone again. True measure of a fantastic boxer or fighter.
-
Marciano was a fighter not a boxer and how many managed to beat him?
-
Thats fair comment Barry, but how many of Marciano,s opponents could jab your head off like Ali could.
-
Roland La Starza and Joe Louis are a couple that spring to mind.
-
Marciano was a mauler and not many since have gone forward in every fight and taken alot by the way from some fantastic fighters. Jersey joe fights were brilliant, Archie moore another great fighter, essard charles to name a few. There were great fights in those days. Nobody got back to say who apart from Foreman and Frazier that was worth mentioning did Ali beat! i love my boxing and cant really come up with any. Have to agree with Ringo.
Who do you think was the best British fighter we had or maybe have?
-
Ali, floyd patterson, liston, cooper, chuvalo, even bugner who went the distance with him, norton, and every other heavyweight who was around at the time, even the great richard dunn ;)
-
ok here is my list of the top 10 british fighters of all time.they are not in any particuler order...Joe Calzaghe...Benny Lynch...Ted Kid lewis....Jimmy Wilde...Ken Buchanan...Jim Driscoll...Chris Eubank...John Conteh....Howard Winstone...Bob Fitzsmmons...So get it on fight fans pick the bones out of that lot .All great fighters.
-
sugar ray robinson was great, but the leaminton licker, randy turpin beat him,but ray won the return bout.
hitman tommy hearns was great, but so was sugar ray leonard they had some great fights,
so many to choose from,
-
Hi Des, THe great Richard Dunn? Good fighter no doubt but great? Paterson was good for sure,Liston the big bear i really dont have an opinion one way or another cause nobody can remember anyone he fought although i do believe he was ruthless. As for the fights with Ali, lots of controversy there for sure....today it would be called a fix especially the 2nd fight. I laugh when people talk about boxing and bugners name comes up. He wouldnt be in my top 50 best fighters, just in the heavyweight division. I never saw chuvalo so cant comment really. Norton was pretty useful i do agree but ali again way past his best at the time. Im still not convinced that the Ali era produced many great fighters thus the best of all time being Ali. Dont get me wrong folks, i love Ali and love not only his boxing but also his charisma. He brought something new to boxing cause at the time it was stale. He is actually a hero of mine too but i just cant see him as the self aclaimed greatest. Ringo you mentioned some great fighters we had from the British isles. You forgot Benn, Honeygan, Mc guigan, Lennox Lewis, The list is endless and nobody really knows who was the greatest making boxing such a fantastic topic.
-
Ronnie, Richard Dunn was my attemp at humour, thought you would have spotted that. ;) :).
-
Ahhh sorry Des. Khan got beat at the weekend so not good for British boxing but British boxing is really health at the moment and alot of good fighters coming up from liverpool area. keep watching.
-
prince nasseem[spelling] was a good fighter until his ego, got the better of him.
-
Yes Dave he was great. When he fought for the title against Barrera and then stopped it was a shame. barrera was a great champ and naseem had never fought his calibur before . Would love to have seen him fighting on. Saturday we have carl Froch. Hes great and i love his go forward attitude. This for me is the biggest uk fight for years. He will have 3 titles if he wins and also the super 7 title. Roll on saturday night.

Hang on a mo......what about our 'Enry Cooper'?
-
What about Joe the Joke Bugner ha ha what a plank .:D:D ;)
-
Ok lets look at joes record. 69 wins i3 lost. 43 wins by way of ko.During the golden era of heavey weight boxing rated no 5 in the world. In 1973 he boxed JoeFrazier said after. the fight only Ali and Foreman had been tougher, Bugner lost by a split desision. You need to check out the fighters Joe beat during his time . If you know your boxing you have to admit Joe was a great fighter not the best in the world but not the dope you make him out to be.You think you know the fight game i dont think you do.
-
Sugar Ray Robinson?
-
WHAT ABOUT 'ENRY'?
-
I mentioned him earlier
-
Nice enough man.Was good for british boxing.however as a fighter he had 55 bouts he lost 14 and was stopped 8 times. Most of his fights were against domestic opposition and a lot were in London Henrys home turf.Henry was a great boxer as far as uk and europe . But as far as world titles went not really a contender. He did however catch Clay with a cracking left hook and make no mistake that was a hell of a shot.but the fact is Henry was not in the same ball park as Clay and the rest is history.

Great link Des. Dont get me wrong. Ali was a great fighter and we use that word loosely in boxing terms but he was great. I only ever said i didnt think he was the greatest. As for the link lets look at it closely. It says Ali fought more world champions and contenders than any other Heavyweight. Liston as most boxing fans would agree(i hope)there was something dubious about both fights. The 2nd one was a fix if ever i saw one. Floyd patterson was way past his best and was from a different era than Ali. Norton, Frazier and Forman were all good fighters agreed. leone spinks? Nothing to say on that one. Archie moore im sure needed a walking stick to get to the ring. Its reported he was in his 50s but anyway he was from another era and not Alis. Moore was a great fighter 10 years earlier but not when ali fought him. As for our Henry i have got to go with Ringo he was more a european fighter with a good punch. look at Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbik. Both great fighters who defeated Ali(who it must be said was way past his best during these fights). A young and violent but also gifted fighter called Mike Tyson came along and hammered both of them thus becoming the youngest heavyweight of all time . i can still remember that punch that floored Berbik. Awesome! Tyson also Hammered Michael spinks who was a great fighter and alot better than his brother leone that Ali defeated and also lost to. There were some really good heavyweights around the Tyson time but they had no chance. So still controvertial Ali at his best and Tyson at his best! who was the best?
-
Glad you liked the link, Ronnie, but you seem to slipping away from your question, appart from foreman and frazier, who did ali beat you ask, well the answer is there in the link, everybody who was around at the time, whether you or i disagree with the results, i:e liston fix or patterson passed it, thats what the guy did and beat them all including all european champions too,he avoided no one, also this guy had a 3 year break away from boxing for opting out of Veitnam and came back and beat who was about then too. now whether he could have beat boxers from another era is another one for opinions, but your question has been answered, whether you, i or any one else doesnt rate his opponents, thats what the guy did, (case closed) ;)
-
Froch lose,s title bid abroad, thats a few failures abroad for brits in 2011, put up a good show but Ward was too classy for him.:(
-
Well said des. Point taken. shame about froch.
-
Been reading through all the comments, all have valid points, but the question was who is the best BOXER. in my opinion Ali was the greatest BOXER ever, i dont go in for statistics, how many fights won lost etc etc. its the way these guys fight, Without a shadow of doubt Ali was greatest alround BOXER of all time,His boxing ability was textbook, not street brawlers like most. He was a dream and a privilege to watch, Thats my opinion anyway.
-
Good point Jul. yes the original post was boxer but i actually meant boxer/brawler/fighter etc. Yep Ali for boxing. i think boxing is a sport of statistics which makes it so exciting and almost impossible to predict between boxers/fighter from different generations. Every generation brings us yet again fantastic pugalists. All weights have given us some great champions and the list is endless. In our heads we all have our favourites for different reasons. This year we have had in the uk some promising young boxers coming through and next year could be promising for us, but again over shadowed by the world champion losses involving Hayes,Froch,Khan etc. Did anyone see the wrestling bout Ali had with gorilla monsoon? Hilarious. Dont know how to link it here but go to you tube and check it out.

Nobody'd mentioned Audly Harrison???
-
I wonder why? Foe me the grestest fighter ever was Suger Ray Robinson. As an amateur he had85 bouts winning them all 69 by way of knockout.A pro career lasting 26 years 200 fights beating the best fighters around at the time.Interesting to note that Ali and Leonard also said Robinson was the greatest ever.It is however impossible to compare fighters there are so many things to consider like who was arround at the time new training methods different styles However all that said in my book it has to be Sugar Ray.

who the hell,s audly harrison[?] ;)

Ringo i think im with you on that one if you say pound for pound. He was awesome and before my time but he fought good boxers and had great style and could have a brawl at the same time.yes Audly Harrison. strange when you ask a boxer to come dancing he will yet when you say come boxing he cant.
