Title: Stopped by traffic police
Post by: DonM on April 06, 2014, 10:02:14 AM
A friend was stopped by the traffic police on his way back from Dalaman airport last night.

He had his driving license checked and was also breathalysed. Fortunately  he had not had a drink.

Does anybody know the drink drive limits please.

I remember the days when a yabanci plate equalled too much hassle, wave 'em through. Of course these days yabanci plate equals money making opportunity.

I used to find that a Yabanci plate was a fine opportunity for them to practice their English and for me practice my Turkish. Got pulled over several times by the Jandarma and Polis.

Only got fined once, near Antalya, and that was in May because I'd forgotten to pay my tax in January. Got a reduced fine because I'd cheekily asked for "Indirim" and got further discount for prompt payment.

The funniest stop was near Konya at about 3am. I was passenger in my car when we were stopped but because the car was registered to me I had to deal with the officers. There were 4 other cars in the lay-by and we were all breathalised. That's 4 Turkish drivers, and me the passenger, using the same breathaliser. By the time it got to me at the end of the line it had a distinct garlic taste to it. God knows what would have happened if I'd given a positive reading.  ;)

I was stopped just at the Traffic Check just outside Gocek Saturday evening on the way back from Dalaman.
They were stopping everyone and only seemed interested in breath tests & licences, they didn't want the car documents.
Fortunately if I do have a drink I always do so before boarding the plane & never on board so that it works through the system before landing.
