I was trying to explain to some one the other day how the "clothes shop" money change trick worked , but I just couldn't remember the details.
I have had a quick search but can't find the explanation........ can some one remind me how it went.
( And is he still at it ?? There is no sign outside his shop and as far as I remember it was the sign that was an essential part of the scam).
Cheers !

Someone will correct me if this is wrong.
If the rate was 2.39 the change man would offer 2.30 ten which was in fact 2.31. :(
-
That's it ......... but I seem to remember him quoting a rate to three decimal figures for some reason...... which meant that the trick was some how even better.

He did us once and I can't remember how he did it, just recall him quoting a rate then 'offering' to 'round it up', which made it sound like he was doing us a favour. Obviously we said yes. Took us a couple of hours to realise what happened! >:(

2.310 or something like that.

He's still doing change, but not at the clothes shop on the corner by Lykia Is Markesi. He now operates out of an emlak / small souvenir shop about 2 - 3 doors closer to the Migros in town. Strangely, for the first time in months, he made a half hearted attempt to offer me "change" today. Having said that it was raining & I'd put up the hood on my jacket, so it's possible he didn't recognise me ;)

He still trys it on with myself and the other half, and we have walked past him for years.
I think each time i wear a new hat he thinks i"m a tourist?

Liz/Davybill, Does not really matter if he knows you or not, he's still the charming bloke we've all known for years!!!!

I am sure the trick was even better than Highlander's explanation.
If 2.39 was advertised but you ended up with 2.31 that's just 8 Kurus you loose (per pound )
I seem to remember the hit was more substantial than that.
Am I just bitter and twisted and has it clouded my memory ?

If my explanation was correct it equates to 3.35 % on very £.
I'm not saying that he would have managed to but if he managed to con 20 families changing £ 500.00 every week over the season he would have pocketed over 20,000 tl

I once bought boxer shorts at the Sunday market - it was 7 for 12 lira or something. The guy didn't have the correct change so somehow managed to get me to part with an extra note and he made up the difference with socks.
To this day I have no idea whether I gained or lost.

You won by a foot.

I remember bartering with "Perfume Man" when he was selling rugs.
He had me at an advantage from the outset because I was in Scarlett Bar.
Long story cut short after much bartering I ended up paying more they his last offer. :( :( :(
