Can anyone give me an overview of whether it is worthwhile purchasing a mobile phone for those periods when in Turkey?  For example is there a 'pay as you go' option? can you get a SIM card option so that you could 'swap' cards with your UK mobile? and finally what are the costs and here's the killer question, where do you go for the best deal?

Thanks in anticipation  :)

Hiya
There's been quite alot of discussion about phones. If you use the search facility at the top right hand corner of this page you should find all you need to know. Happy hunting!

We had a phone chipped to accept Turkish simm card.  It was at the lock smiths that we noticed someone having the phone swapped. We left our phone with him and collected later. Can't remember how much but it wasn't expensive. Also many shops where you can top up your credit.

We had our phone unlocked while we waited.   It only took a few minutes and cost about £12.00 including Turkish sim card and 100 units of credit - and switching the language to English!

If you take ot a nokia phone that is on Vodafone chances are its unlocked already try in the UK put in a sim card from another service provider and see if it works.

I found using a pay as you go sim is fine just for texts
