Any NTL or BT workers out there who can advise if its possible to get around the present "we do not have the callers number" when an overseas call has been received on a landline in the uk.  Is there any way that the number can be displayed to my elderly relatives in the Uk (So they know l have rung if not in when l call).  Tried calling NTL this morning but could not get the advisor to understand what my request was !!!  Would the number be displayed if l rang from my mobile?

If they get the message "we do not have the callers number" then the CLI identifier is not present in the c7 string (probably replaced with zeros) and so, no, you cannot get around it. If you get the message saying "the caller withheld their number" then it is technically possible to override the withhold, which the operators and emergency services do.
As for using a mobile, ot might work, you would have to try it and see.
alternatively, why not buy them an answering machine ?
