Wives?
« on: October 16, 2014, 15:36:08 PM »
A friend of mine married a Turk at our local Turkish register office and has now left him and returned to the UK.   A divorce has not taken place.    We have now heard that he has married a Turkish girl apparently at the local Mosque.    Am I right in thinking this second marriage is not legal or has he committed bigamy?

I'm not sure but I don't think a mosque marriage is legal until they've done the official paperwork

If his first marriage is registered, then his second marriage at the mosque is not legal.

Marriage through mosque has no (legal) value.
It is actually against law. You're not allowed to do a mosque marriage without having done an official marriage but it still happens of course.

There's no such thing as a Christian Law as far as I'm aware.

There is English Law and there's Turkish Law.

However for followers of Islam the Qur'an says:

Marry woman of your choice in twos' threes' or fours' but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly, (with them), then only one' [Al-Qur'an 4:3]

There are currently followers of Islam living in the UK who have multiple wives.
