The problem with Forum posts ( and emails and FB posts) is that they are one dimensional only.

The words are there, but the person’s face and voice are not.

Think how many different tones and expressions you could attach to the simple phrase “I’m not going”. This could be a child having a tantrum or a mate telling you he is not going to the pub.

People choose to attach different tones to posts. Sadly, a post written in jest and with humour is immediately interpreted by some people as having dark undertones.

If you want to go the dark undertone route all the time a forum is probably not the place for you.

The last 2 posts are probably the most sensible ones here regarding how this thread has spiralled out of control.

I laughed at Highlander’s back to front cliche,
“I am fairly sure he knows more about Turkey than you or I have forgotten”
I doubt that H will take offence at me pointing it out.

See what happens when I get upset   :-[  :) :-[.

No offence taken   :)

I am going to try and take Colwyn's wise advice - but I cannot promise I'll succeed.    ;)

The reason I joined this forum was to get advice but what kept me on  it was Colwyn's tales about Turkey.. John F..has Pmd me on more than one occasion giving me advice and support.. He actually has a good sense of humour.  It's a pity that some people have lost theirs in this post..Maybe an emoji could be put to use.?  ????????

I agree with you Linda... Not easy running a forum.. I find him very informative too and as he lives in Turkey (for now)also knows more about it than us holiday makers.

Trying to remain objective....at least to me, it does come across as bullying and would likely put people off posting which seems self defeating for a forum. Especially one where visitor numbers to Turkey are down (and have been for a while) so you'll likely have a smaller pool of new blood wanting to post anyway...

Justify it to yourselves however you want.

Thanks for all the useful info as usual though.

Lets get this straight J.T. I consider you are the King of snide, you thrive on it. An administrator who is,  I assume, suppose to help members, but comes all the time with cutting and rude remarks, which, I am sure would put off any prospective new  members.  Now you have even taken the exulted position of criticising a  member who dare to like post you do not.   Do members need to be careful and only like posts you approve of in future?  As usual,  you are an anonymous unpleasant cyber bully, hiding behind just a set of initials.  Easy to be rude to people when no one knows who you are. I am willing to meet up with you in Calis sometime (if you are still visiting Turkey) you can then tell me face to face about my snide postings.

King of snide?  I don't think so, if I disagree with something someone's posted I'm far too direct to ever be described as "snide".

If your definition of a cyber bully is a) someone who challenges you when you post incorrect or misleading information, or b) someone who calls you out when you make unwarranted personal attacks on other members, or c) someone who challenges you when you make sweeping statements that you then declare as "fact", then yep guilty as charged - in your eyes.

Like all of the Mod and Admin team, I do my best to stop actual cyber bullying.  I wouldn't normally do this, but here is a quote from a topic I started last year in the private Mod & Admin forum, albeit slightly redacted for obvious reasons:

"I'm seeing a pattern develop recently (xxxx xxxx xxxxx xxx xxxxx) with a few members re JH - xxx xxx x xxxxxxx x xxxxxx but she is a member here and deserves same level of respect as everyone else."

So, the reality is that you get the same level of protection as every other member on here against actual cyber bullying.

I may be "anonymous" to you, but not to many members on here (and other Turkish forums) with who I've enjoyed many a small libation over the years - I'm just a bit picky about who i socialise with.  I've been to Turkey three times since the turn of the year, how many times have you been?

Colwyn, has taken a moral stand not to come to Turkey as he does not like the Political situation. That is his prerogative.  He chooses to stay as a member of this Turkish forum, to get advice should he decide to return,  but he is always involved in any posting that make remarks about me, as he did on this post, regarding a Chemists. This is not information gathering.  However, it is fine, it is not snide because it is Colwyn.
I am sure, like me, other members, do not like the politics in Turkey either.  However, we still chose to come to Turkey as we love the place and we also love and have great affection for the people in our local area who over the years we have made friends with, and would hate seeing any of their businesses suffer from lack of tourists.  We, like others did think of selling up as we hate the Politics just now and what the future may hold, but we will be staying.
In fact, if we all decided not to come to Calis and the local resorts anymore  because of Turkish Government policies, the resorts would soon suffer and possibly would not recover and close down.  Then we would no longer need to use a Turkish Forum.  Colwyn would have nowhere to write and the Admin would be out of a job.

WTF is that all about?  What is your problem with Colwyn and the fact he's made a decision not to visit Turkey based on his principles?  Is it Colwyn you've got the issue with, or is it his principles or a combination of both?  Or are members who who do not visit Turkey not allowed a voice?

Whatever it is, your prior dig at him in this topic was not the first time you've done it, I've pulled you up on at least one occasion before, maybe twice - I can't be bothered checking back to confirm.  Maybe a bit of pot kettlism when it comes to claims of cyber bullying...

If its me you're referring to, we've never lived full time in turkey even though I've now worked in Istanbul since 2004 - I go to the office when I have to, sometimes frequently, sometimes less so.  Even though we had a house in istanbul, it simpoly didn't work for us for a variety of reason.
