AKP and Inflation
« on: November 03, 2017, 10:45:18 AM »
The AKP swept into government in 2002. Of course, a good deal of its support comes from traditional religious voters {"The Pious Ones"} especially outside the Western areas of Turkey. But I have seen it argued that the AKP also attracted a lot middle class support not primarily motivated by religion. Instead, these voters appreciated the AKP's management of the economy. I think this is dramatically illustrated by  the chart below. Inflation had been wild for years in Turkey when I first went there in 1997 and it was at about 100% - prices doubling every year. But look what happened after the AKP got into government in 2002. In historical terms inflation has been under control since then - even if Turkey's inflation is high in relation to other countries. Today inflation is reported as creeping back up; the highest level since 2008. Is it too much to hope that a declining economy might topple Erdogan's pre-eminence in the polls sometime in the near-ish future?

It works for me in Firefox and Edge but not in Comodo Dragon (which is a Chrome look-a-like I think).

p.s And now it works in Dragon again. I hate this bloody Postimage thingy. I can only load it in Edge but can usually see it anywhere.
