This is the information that is needed.  debates have been on going elsewhere on the web.  Apparently if you have an English sim and whatever handset that is not a problem, the problem is only going to arise when you put a Turkish Sim card in to a phone other than one purchased in Turkey!  stinks don't it?

Registering the Mobile Phones

The contraband mobile phones should be registered until the end of October and as of December 13, 2005 unregistered phone will be blocked.

In order to learn whether your phone is contraband or not please follow the below instructions.

1. Click *#06# and enter YES and 15-digit number appears on the screen of your phone (in some phones you do not need to enter Yes for the number). This is IMEI number of your phone.

2. Visit the web site http://imei.tk.gov.tr/ IMEI Sorgulama (IMEI Inquiry) page appears. Write there your 15-digit IMEI number ( e.g. 123456789012345). Then press "Sorgula" key. Sometimes two more numbers appear together with the IMEI number, take no notice of them.

3 The situation of your phone appears below if it reads "Kayitli" (Registered), it means there is no problem. If it reads "Bulunamadadi" (not found) this means you should register your phone to Turk Telecom by paying 5 YTL.

If you neglect to take this action first you get a warning message and then your phone will be blocked on December 13th . From then on you cannot use it within Turkish borders.

The website is Turkish Telecom, so why do the staff not know about it?

So is this presumably an amnesty period for existing phones and in future it will not be possible to use a Turkish sim card unless you buy the phone in Turkey. Are they that much more expensive in Turkey then?

The link above doesn't appear to work any more. I clicked on the link on the page that did come up but it doesn't work (for me anyway, BUT it could be down to AOL as it has been worse than useless for over a month now).
Do other people manage to open links?

We priced up phones in June. There was very little difference in basic phones similar to the one we had. There was also very little difference in the all singing & dancing varieties that our friend Dave priced up.
On all phones we looked at the difference was less than a fiver. Dave was surprised as his he'd really looked hard here (the month before he bought it) & the same phone was just £5 more in Turkey. Others he'd priced were the same price or very little difference.
Don't know whether we just price compared in the cheapest phone shops in Fethiye by luck but wouldn't have thought so.

Linda,
Delete the coma at the end of the link and it will work. But basically if you brought your mobile from the uk it is not registered,so the link is not much help

Also try this link www.mymerhaba.com  - look in Forums under Registering Mobile phones. It is very informative but still leaves you much in the dark as to sorting it now. Hopefully things will be clarified before long or thousands of mobile phones in Turkey will be as useful as a chocolate teapot. :)

40% of the phones in Turkey have been smuggled in from abroad. This is the goverments way of clamping down on this and get some tax revenue back.
There will be a SMS going out to all phones this month and from what I heard, you just reply to it and then get deducted 5 lira off your bill.

Thanks for that Haluk, it always helps to know the reasons why and whilst we may not agree it does begin to make more sense now.

We will not be in Calis until December 16th. Will that be too late to register our phones?
