still confused - if you have 2 VOIP phones and leave 1 in Turkey, do you need a computer internet connection or do you just ring each other on these VOIP phones like any other phone?

For "voice over internet protocol" you need a computer.

VOIP phones are only the same as using a set of headphones & microphone on your computer.
The phone plugs into your computer usb port and you make a phone call that way.
You can call computer to computer (as long as the other person has the same VOIP program as you do, ie, Skype) or a landline/gsm.

Crabbit - Thank you for that simple explaination for a thickie like me. I'm only just getting used to computers and all this new technology is really baffling me. I'm with Sue Mac here as I want to find the cheapest way of speaking to family in Turkey - both landlines and mobiles.

Hi Stoop,

I have just been looking at the Tesco Phone web site, but can't find a price for calling Turkish mobiles (not a UK one in Turkey, but a Turkish one in Turkey). The 9p per min you mentioned at the start of this thread - is that a figure you have read somewhere, or is it a figure you have been charged?

The 9p per minute is for ringing Turkish landline numbers. Mobiles in Turkey are 17p per minute but it does not say if it is a UK or Turkish mobile. Looking at the wording it implies Turkish but I would check this out.

Skype also have a listing for Turkish mobiles and they do mention the Turkish providers. The rates are similar to Tesco's:

If you ring best minutes on 08715519898 then dial the mobile number you are contacting it will cost 8p per min its the best around at mo as i have already checked. hope this helps

I use a system which is 8p a minute - 0871 551 9898 then call the number you want, done! saved me a fortune....

Dialwise 08444 398080 is 3p per minute I think..
