Title: Üzümlü Morel Mushroom Festival
Post by: alec on February 14, 2009, 19:32:01 PM
A festival is planned in Üzümlü starting on 10 April, celebrating the morel mushrooms which grow in this area.

The main purpose is to put Üzümlü on the map in a positive way, not so much fundraising this time.  Planning is in its early stages, but ideas for a concert of local performers, trips to local beauty spots like Cadyanda, mushroom-collecting and/or photographing forays, stalls selling local produce, and exhibitions or competitions are being considered.

The idea is to involve everybody, so if anyone has any ideas or would like to organise or take part in anything, let me know.  At any rate, if you're going to be in the area in April, put the festival in your diaries.  The idea is to have a good time, and get to know the place better.

The other thing they are asking for at this stage is offers of accommodation for rent at a reasonble price for visitors.

'They' is FETAV - the Fethiye Tourism organisation, with contributions from groups like the Üzümlü Dernek.  It's centred round a fungus expert from Istanbul who specialises in these sort of things - leading mushrooming outings, giving talks about wild mushrooms etc.  Morels are much sought after (and expensive), and they grow in plenty in this area, in the season.

I cannot believe the idiotic replies from people - many of whom do not even live in Uzumlu - to the very sensible idea of having a festival here based on a local, naturally occuring product.  In Nif/Arpacik they have a Cherry Festival in June, in which Turks have participated for years and enjoyed. Turks also come from Fethiye to enjoy searching for the morel-type toadstool in the woods around Uzumlu every year in the season.  My only problem with the idea of a Morel Festival is that the British will think they invented this edible toadstool in the first place!
I have given up writing on this forum because I know the kind of come-back to be expected from those who write on it.  However, I also know there are a lot of people who read it but are wise enough not to do what I am doing now!(Signed: Mrs. Voyageur)

I was talking with someone today who was saying there is a mushroom called Çnta.  I was wondering if the Morel mushroom is a Çnta?  Does anyone know??  Sorry, not sure if Çnta is the right spelling.

When did you give up? Was it long ago? For your reference, more people will now know about this fungal festival through this topic CBF than any other source available. The humour can be ignored or enjoyed.

Whether or not there are "idiotic replies" doesn't prevent the message getting through. Actually, when it comes to idiotic replies, yours ranks quite highly in my view.

If you don't like CBF don't come, there's enough misery in the world without people like you coming here, preaching to us all about who you think may be idiots.

Keep the local info and humour coming in similar measures folks, I think she's gone

They (at a planning meeting) were trying to come up with a slogan for the festival.  Someone thought of Bul Beni Ye Beni, which I thought was totally boring (no I'm not going to tell you what it means, you'll have to find out for yourselves); I thought of Ye Beni Öl - Eat Me and Die, but they said that was the wrong sort of mushroom.

I'm sure someone can think of someting better.  Printable, hopefully.

The boring answer: not çanta - that means bag - but çintar.  Those are the brownish ones that come in the autumn.  Some people think they're chanterelles but they're not (but they're still very good to eat).  Morels are called Kuzu Göbegi locally, meaning lamb's stomachs, because the cap has a pattern similar to a piece of tripe.  There's also a sort of truffle, like a small potato.

I think we actually encourage people to come on here when they realise it is so light hearted,if they cant laugh at themselves we are happy yot do it for them:D

I think the festival would be brilliant for Uzumlu. They have proved they have a community spirit with the Cement Works issue.I would be worried about basing the theme around one species of mushroom in case there were none available at the time, ie- crop failure or overpicking.I would think a broader theme would be safer.Local kids and schools should be involved to hopefully carry it forword though the years. Its an ideal setting for a festival.Good luck.

Point taken about mushroom crop failure etc, but these morels really are a feature of the district, and they're not just any old toadstools, so the idea was that it was worth centring the festival on them.  The intention is to involve other local products (wine, weaving...), local food, local customs etc, starting small this year and expanding later if it's successful.  And the news is that the first morel of the season has been spotted.

Scunner, how long did it take you to find the previous post from Voyageur/Sagalout?
Why is it that some people can put posts on here (e.g. organised by someone of questionable morels - to my mind offensive)and the Moderators do/say nothing but when somewhen makes the point that some of the 5 year old schoolboy 'humour' is not funny they get lambasted, especially by you?
It is, as usual, the moderators who encourage the silly posts.
You are right, it IS through the forum that people will find out about local events but I, for one, would wonder what type of people would attend after reading some of the posts.
By the way, it wasn't Voyager who did put on the post, it was Mrs Voyageur.  Perhaps you would like to apologise to her? [?]

Hahaha that's a new one, nobodies ever said that before about me. Thanks for being original when slagging me off :D It's morals by the way.

quote:

Because childish humour is acceptable on CBF, take it or leave it. Go read the Times if CBF offends you.

quote:
it wasn't Voyager who did put on the post, it was Mrs Voyageur

Then maybe you should ask her about her husband's revolting morals when he posts on a public forum before questioning mine.

quote:
Perhaps you would like to apologise to her?

When she has enough influence over her husband's drunken and repulsive actions to get him to apologise to me and those unfortunate enough to read his vile tirade, I will think about it. Then I shall say no.

If you don't like CBF, go away. Visiting is not compulsory. Be careful what when you attack someone for being offensive, when you are defending people who use the internet to make offensive posts in public, it's a tricky stance to take.

The 'questionable morels' post was not put on by you (and I spelt it as PeterW did)
Why is it that the moderators and 'owner' of this forum feel they can say anything about anybody but if any criticism goes back their way then those people are told to 'get off if they don't like it'?
Mrs V is not responsible for what her husband thinks or says so why call her an idiot?
Seems to me anyone can put a post on here, whether offensive or not, but, God forbid, don't have a go at the people running the forum.  Is it a case of we'll dish it out but won't take it?
Title: Üzümlü Morel Mushroom Festival
Post by: Scunner on February 17, 2009, 18:05:13 PM
Funny, my wife feels very responsible for my actions, when they are not to her taste. I think she (Mrs. V) is responsible for whatever vile postings come from her house and her family but hey, that's childish old me.

Who put on the "questionable morels" post? Stop faffing around in gossip, spit it out! Why should I be responsible for vetting the posts of someone you find offensive? Offensive on CBF or in "real life"? I have no idea what you are talking about because you can't go further than hint about someone unnamed who in your opinion is "offensive"! Should 5000 members all email me with a list of people they find offensive, and I'll stop them all posting?

It is true that you shouldn't have a go at the people running the forum. We do it for love (and fun, sorry about that) - and range from people who get paid nothing for their efforts to one poor sod who bankrolled it for years  ;)

Once again, if you don't like it we don't need it running down. We know we can't please everyone but I suggest we please nearly everyone. That doesn't include people like you, and you should vote with your feet. If you prefer humour free websites, with topics like "What was the last thing you said to a peg" or "Is this utensil in your kitchen drawer", email me because I feel I can help.

Now, answer my questions in paragraph 2. Whispering about someone being offensive is easy, but no use to me. Stand up and shout the name of this person!

This one? Offensive?

You need to explain why, I can't see it...

It's a post from someone who is stating that it is a good idea, and they are most pleased that they will be over and able to attend. They further edge into non-serious mode (dangerous ground on a sensible forum like this) and make a small joke about trying local "magic mushrooms", should anyone dubious enough to have knowledge on such things be willing to share their knowledge on this hallucinogenic subject.

Peter will be surprised at the widespread offence he has caused to, erm, you.

Ooo-errr Missus!

I do seem to have set the cat amongst the pigeons with my "questionable morels". (Oooops! Sorry if I've now just offended all you bird lovers out there).   ;)

As Alec knows from my direct contacts, I'm very supportive of the idea and happy to help promote the event.  My intention was to show support (serious bit) and extend the excruciatingly bad running gags about morels (jokey bit).  I'll even spell out the JOKE . . . that should kill it if it's not dead already.  Questionable morels = mushrooms that respond to questions - geddit?

Sorry Scunner - I don't know how you put up with this sometimes.  Please don't give up on us.  I'm sure most people on the board appreciate what you do to keep this going.

I know some people reading the forum do find some of the quips amusing. And some don't.  I have found a few things put on rather offensive although I'm sure they're not meant to be. ;)
What really infuriated me were the responses posted by Scunner directed at Mrs V.  She HAD signed Mrs. V (not just Voyageur) so for Scunner to make such a verbal attacks was uncalled for (to the point where he felt he had to look up previous posts?!)
The icing on the cake was Scunner deciding that Mrs. V was responsible for husband's thoughts actions etc.  What a ridiculous thing to say.  The only person who is resposible for an adult's actions is that person not wife, mother aunt or whomever.
Mrs. V is one of the kindest, most gentle, thoughtful ladies, and I do mean lady, anyone could meet.  She did not deserve the attack metered out by Scunner especially when he called her an idiot.
I still think an apology is due.

Please try to be a little more thoughtful and not insult good, honest and valued CBF members who enjoy a little light banter to go with the heavy stuff. Quite tepid stuff, believe me, when compared to the vitriol of her husband on CBF a while back (for which I assume no apology is thought necessary or expected by this kindest of ladies of her own husband!).

I will apologise

Scunner - you have shown your true colours again.  The way this discussion has developed is proof of what I was trying to say in the first place.  Someone posts a perfectly sensible idea, which is taken over by the people in charge of the forum and turned into an excuse for schoolboy jumour at the expense of others.  What you are now saying is an exact example of the reason so many people avoid posting - because they know any simple remark may end up as vicious dog-fight.  I had forgotten just how nasty it can be, otherwise I too would have kept my fingers off the keyboard.
You can gurantree you will not be hearing from Mrs. Voyageur again.  But when you tell me I should have moved here if I do not like it, I would point out that my husband and I were living here a long time before you came along - not that you even live in Uzumlu!  And yes, you and remarks from your side kick, Kevin 3 do make me feel I would like to be long gone. One up to the two of you!?
I am not responsible for my husband's posts, just as he is not responsible for mine, but in my view your vitriolic comments on an open forum about someone you neither know nor know anything about, are unforgivable.

Listen darling, I am ultimately responsible for the house rules here and I stand by them. If I ever have the misfortune to visit your house I'll abide by your house rules too. Can't see an invitation coming anytime soon mind you. Tongue in cheek humour is permitted and yes, encouraged. That isn't going to change so it really does seem that this place isn't for you.

You seem to think that there was a "vicious dog fight" here. There was not. Alec is publicising a bloody mushroom festival and good luck to him. He chose the best place to do it. Mention of mushrooms do seem to attract mushroom related puns and gags, don't ask me why, I'm not a humourologist. Do you know, with every 'joke', Alec's topic returns to the top of the pile. No bad thing, and I don't hear Alec complaining at all.

Your post, to me, personifies everything that is wrong with certain Brits living over there, and for your entertainment I will list them:

1. You subscribe to the belief that because you have been there longer than someone else, you know more than them.

2. You believe that people who live outside Uzumlu have no right to an opinion on anything relating to Uzumlu.

3. When describing the comments of various members of this forum as "idiotic", you refer to them as idiots. However, when I call you an idiot, it was "vitriolic comments" and "unforgivable". I've mentioned before where you need to look for vitriolic comments, a lot closer to home than me!!!

I had no idea Kevin3 was my sidekick, we only met once in the fish market for about 5 minutes, a few years ago :D

So, finally, can you and your "sidekick" peecee give it a rest, finding offence in perfectly tame posts by CBF members. Let Alec publicise his mushroom festival information and let a whole lot of fully grown men tell some pretty crappy one liners.

Mr Scunner
p.s. I certainly didn't tell you that you shouldn't have moved here. WRONG AGAIN!!!
