I saw a pc program whereby the shopkeeper typed a sentence onto his computer in turkish and the program translated the sentence into english. Not being turkish speaking I could not get him to understand I wanted the name of the program. He has now left the area and I am trying to find out i any of you nice people know of a program or electronic device capable of doing this task[?] cheers alan

Annalan, Hi.

Try this website  www.ectaco.co.uk they do a hand held device which actually speaks the translation for you....I think they are about £250
I have one of their non speaking translators but of course they dont help with pronunciation but are nevertheless quite useful. About the size of a small organiser so easily carried. :)

Turkish company called Kokosoft do a translation programme. I have a copy, kindly given to us by the guy who used to run the Internet cafe in Calis who has since shut up (near the wine shop). Unfortunately we cannot make this run on Windows XP. I will be trying  to run this on 98 when time allows. In the cafe it worked brilliantly, unfortunately all the instructions are in Turkish and we are unable to to "invert"  the programme into English on our computer right now. If we ever manage to do so I will report back.

Hello to all,
 
I cannot believe how difficult it is to even find a Turkish/English dictionary or phrase book in the UK !! Shocking !!! Even the library in my two most local towns didnt have any - its rubbish here !!

Borders bookstore have a couple and WHSmith do a cd rom.
Or the next time your in Calis look out for Hassan he has copies.

Next time you're in Calis, they have some in a stationery shop - down the hill from the dolums, turn left and it's on that side.  I know because I wanted some bubble wrap and he had to get one to findout what I wanted.

I have just got a Turkish language computer course from my local library. Its called PDQ Quick Language Course and is by Linguaphone.

Four CDs and a book.

Haven't tried it yet, but it looks good.

Ive actually seen several copies of the Linguaphone CD set on ebay for £14.99 plus postage - i guess that aint bad then ?

I've got a Teach Yourself Turkish Book and CD and both my local Smiths and Waterstones had it when I looked in the summer.  If they don't they will order it in for you.  It's by David Pollard and Asuman Celen Pollard.  It's seems pretty easy to follow - just wish I had more time to spend on it!!!

Thanks, I just think - why have a massive shelf saying foreign languages when they only have french and german ? - bout right for UK really !!  Bet there is millionz of books on Taxes !! Dont answer that coz im going off track and rambling as usual soz...
