Living higher up In Ovacik when we bought and planted 3 Bougainvillea's we were told to buy the darker colours as they would be better for the colder weather. They have been ok until this last
severe winters frost which has finished them off, so we are looking to replace them with hardier plants that stand a better chance. So would appreciate any thoughts on this please. We have just had a Pergola built at the back of the villa and ideally would like a pretty plant that wont takes ages to get going and climb.

Some of our bougainvillea died after the cold winter as well but our jasmine plants survived very well. Maybe that could be an option for you.

In our opinion!!?? Stick with Bougi nothing to beats the colour. Ask someone to fleece the plants through the winters,once established they are very hardy, ours are ten years old. The first year or so we had your same problem. Bougi IOOpinion is too harsh for a pergola. Large leaf Variegated Ivy is a an alternative but takes time to kick in then easy to control and prune. Honeysuckle is fast growing with colour and highly scented can be untidy if not kept in check. Pauline's favourite would probably be Jasmine fast growing small leaves wonderful evening scent. Sunny position? Grapes could be an alternative. Campsis is also fast growing and suited to pergola type structures,has good looking orange bell flowers some are evergreen with smaller flowers. A mixture would of any of these may survive and be ideal maybe?? All need tying and training We are top side in Ovacik.

Can we plant anything now that will cover a long wall pretty quickly. There is very little soil in this area but we are fed up with everyone saying that it needs painting every year. Evergreen preferably. We dont want much do we? Ovacik 2 you seem pretty up on your plants. Can u help? It is also a shaded area.

We've got Virginia creeper over our walls, grows soooo fast and is a lovely red shade in autumn winter. it's evergreen.
2 of our Bougainville looked like they were dying, you have to cut all the branches of back to the wood and they start again.
However another one is a different type, purple flowers and didn't die back at all. The purple flowers are papery and have little white flowers attached, this could be the answer. Ours has grown upto an upstairs balcony in one year and didn't mind the cold at all.

We lost two out of four, and we are in Fethiye.
FYI I have seen yellow bourg in a place just past the big migros. Never seen yellow before.

mercury! Only 12 years of trial and many errors in our Ovacik garden plus my wife/Boss. On our walls we have a mixture of Boston Ivy/Virginia Creeper just need keeping in check, Large leaf variegated Ivy and plain green Ivy. Ivy is slow to start but will self cling. Any plant that is as quick growing as we all need at some time usually has some problems that we should be aware of. Virginia creeper is great as Kayakabab says see the link for the pros and cons to help make up your own mind. http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/virginia_creeper.htm We also agree with kayakabab as to the deep purple Bougi being the most hardy. The best being the smaller leaf and smaller flower variety though more spiky. We have a red one that is surviving for many years but no luck with the other colours in our location.

Lost 2 and 2 hibiscus in the frost down here in Koça Çalis but our climbing rosea that has lots of small yellow/cream flowers and is fast growing survived and is better than ever this year.Also Plumbago (blue jasmine)grows fast and you just cut it back to 1foot in October/November and up it comes again next year and flowers all summer till october.

I have one small orange bougainvilla in tub its ok one small flower pale pink in tub both okay ,one dark red in ground downstairs ok on first floor balcony all dead .:(

We have over 10 Bougainvilla some looked very dead during our April visit although by the time we left some small shoots were coming back. In answer to covering a wall try honeysuckle as this is evergreen and you do get a nice smell we have these that grow over 10 foot wall and they require little maintenance once established.

My Bougainvillas just coming to life - looked dead but just this week sprouting leaves so dont pull it up yet give it another week. Mauve one is hardiest and flowers 9 months of the year. Virginia creeper lovely but so messy and takes over garden if not careful thought I had got rid of it from my garden but always finding new shoots.

Virginia Creeper for fast coverage and frost friendly...
Honeysuckle for flowers, evergreen,fast coverage and frost friendly.....
I wrap my bougainvillea and place it inside our covered terrace and it still dies.
We were told a great tip when we first moved here, Uzumlu, and it probably is relevant to Ovacik, plant anything that grows in the Uk or Japan as they survive the extremes of temperature.
If you live in Fethiye , Calis etc none of the above applies due to the lack of frost normally.
