Title: Golde Syrup
Post by: WordBird on February 26, 2015, 13:20:49 PM
Another food question......is golden syrup available over here and if so, where?
I've looked in Kipa and Migros (in what I thought were the obvious sections) but couldn't see any.

Little Miss WB is craving syrup sponge pudding so as we have some girlie time coming up I was hoping I could indulge her.   :)

I think iv'e seen it in Azda Hisaronu and a shop selling English products but I can't remember where. It would have

been Hissy' or Ovacik as I don't normally food shop in Fethiye. I think iv'e seen Maple syrup also. Failing that, Honey.??

I am sure if you asked on here you could soon be inundated with us bringing syrup over for you.  Just ask Nicola what the response was when she asked for ginger biscuits!!

Try any of the pork shops, I think it is part of their range of UK products.

Pekmez is a good alternative to golden syrup.

Ginger biscuits for life; for any normal person! Didn't last long at ours though!

When I first moved over I wanted Golden Syrup but now use honey instead and would never go back. So much nicer and of course healthier. I even ended up throwing away the GS I had in the cupboard.

I believe there is a recipe on here for Golden Syrup if you fancy making your own courtesy of Diver Baz.

Thanks guys.
I thought about using honey instead - I love it - but Madam wanted the real deal.
May have a look in the pork shops and indulge her this once.....then again, might not!!

The last time I looked in pork shops it was syrup with maple syrup Ive used that for ginger biscuits no problem. Failing that a couple of people making and selling pickles and jams also sell it and thats the real deal, using it now on porridge. I got it at one of the fayres.

Honestly golden syrup is so easy to make and costs very little . It really is just sugar and water and a squeeze of lemon. If it sets too hard its easy to just warm it up to a pouring level .Looks and tastes the same as shop bought syrup. Same applies if you don't cook it long enough and it sets too runny just recook it a bit longer .So simple

Well, I seem to be getting into doing this kind of thing since we moved here - preserving lemons, pickling things, drying my own herbs etc - so maybe I will give it a go!   :)
