Title: Wales v Portugal
Post by: Colwyn on July 05, 2016, 17:43:26 PM
Sosban fach yn berwi ar y tân,
Sosban fawr yn berwi ar y llawr,
A'r gath wedi sgrapo Joni bach.

For those of you who suffer the misfortune of not being Welsh, this is taken from a rather odd folk song about household domestic life. It concerns the fortunes and mishaps of Mary-Ann, the servant David, the baby, the cat, and Little Johnny. The words translate as:

"A little saucepan is boiling on the fire,
big saucepan is boiling on the floor,
And the cat has scratched little Johnny".

Just the sort of thing to sing at a match! C'mon Wales for tomorrow.

For this occasion - and never in rugby - I'm with you, Colwyn.

Sosban fach still has a strong emotional feel despite the translation.

I'm not normally given to tears but listening to the Welsh national anthem at the recent matches brought a lump.

Pob Iwc, Colwyn.

DEWCH YMLAEN CYMRU!!

Lovely comments from Chris Coleman regarding Gary Speed today.

I sincerely hope that he and his team get what they so richly deserve.

How exactly is the big saucepan able to boil on the floor?

It is on the hearth pushed up against a big open fire. I guess. That's how we used to do it in the Scouts.

Shocking interview with Gary Speed's father on BBC this morning.

Stupid woman getting asking the poor man the "same" question over and over.

Embarrassing in the extreme.

In which case I am glad I missed it.

On happier matters my two daughters, who have been firmly English for the better part of four decades, have now discovered they are "half Welsh" which means I have two granddaughters who are a quarter Welsh. All are supporting "their" team this evening - including one year old Freya who has sent me a photo of herself in a red tee-shirt this morning ready for the match.

One particular thing I like about our anthem is that it praises our poets and singers before it praises our gallant warriors. If anyone is interested translations of the lyrics can be found here:

On a recent flight from Madrid to Bristol I sat next to a chap who has a cousin who lives in Chepstow.

I think that makes me part Welsh.

At least for tonight.

Since I may not be in a reflective mood to sip a deep and elegant red wine this evening Hilary has selected a Rioja from Morrisons - Castillo del Sabio (Castle of the Wise). At £5 a bottle it is good value midweek imbibing; almost certainly we'll get through a tenner's worth.

Well done boys: you did the country proud. And so, from reports, did the fans who the French seem to have enjoyed being their guests. My head is a bit sore this morning, but that is because I tripped in the garden yesterday morning and head-butted the shed roof.

Wales looked a bit tired and lacklustre but will enter the next tournament knowing they can play with the big boys.

Shed okay?
