Before you look in Turkey try the British Auction Houses. There are great bargains to be had in old Turkish Carpets.  I am in the antiques business.  I have often looked at the prices of carpets in Turkey and seen them so much cheaper here at Auctions, plus the Auctions in the U.K. must, by law declare the condition and the age of carpets.

Mustafa in the Paspater, Fethiye, next to the Megri restaurant. He sits on the corner outside his shop. Really good old chap and no hard sell. He has looked after us for the 3+ years we have had our villa in Turkey. Good luck.

I know a woman who bought an apartment in Fethiye for 28k and a Turkish carpet for it for 25k. That doesn't answer your question but it does show how ridiculous women can be.

Go and look in Unique, they have the best selection of older, beautiful carpets, as well as furniture, curtains etc and are genuinly pleased to see you and not pushy.  They also have an auction especially during the winter months every month

Turkish carpets  bought in Turkey, even the new ones, unless they are the nylon variety (which many are) are expensive.  However, you are paying for a hand crafted item which will last many life times.  It like everything else, buy it where it's produced and in most cases  it's more expensive, because you are competing with all the tourists, but away from the source it can be much cheaper.    Carpets are a mine field for the novice buyer and I would advise if you don't know about carpets, do some research before you buy.  Saw an ex pat recently who paid £3,500 for a carpet which he thought was an old one and sold it to a U.K. dealer for £320 (not me).   Another point is anything posted to the U.K. that is over £15.00 in value will be subject to customs duty.
