eBook Reader Advice Please
« on: November 08, 2013, 00:47:08 AM »
If anyone can help - I know next to nothing about them :(

The idea is, a woman is retiring from Steph's work and they are thinking about a present. All they have come up with is that she reads lots of books  :)

She is not technical and has no pc, no home internet connection.

What we are looking for is a decent cheap ebook reader (I have no idea where Kindle and Nook differ etc - I just installed the Kindle app on my ipad  :) ) - and one that we can load loads of books onto before giving it.

All advice really appreciated, thanks!

If she has no internet then I'd opt for the Kindle and get one with a 3G connection. That way you can buy/download books anywhere without needing an internet connection. They are also fairly simple to use.....

Over the last year I have bought a Nook and a Sony EReader as gifts and I still prefer the Kindle basic wifi as an easy and most ergonomic model @ £69.  There is a huge shared library of books via people on this forum so getting books isnt usually an issue.

I agree the basic Kindle model is the best, it's light, comfortable and manageable. 3G is probably the best for her as Philrose suggests. A lovely gift I might add, lucky lady  :)

Thanks guys I knew you would come up trumps. Kindle basic sounds just the job. 3G seems quite a lot more than wifi (£109 to £69) so wifi it must be - if we load it up with books will she even need a data connection?

Well she will need wifi or 3G when she wants to buy books or browse the kindle store, it might sound like a lot more but probably worth it if she has no internet connection. Alternatively with the basic model she can still use a friend's connection or Internet cafe?   :)

Yes she can give it to us if she needs anything online. Is a Nook not a good idea? Their one with a light is cheap  :)

I think it depends on personal preference to some extent.

My stepdad bought a couple of e-readers and never used them because he found he didn't like them, but he now has a Kindle and loves it.

I'm a total Kindle convert too, after swearing I never wanted one because I liked a "proper" book in my hands. And they're certainly great for travelling - couldn't have got 100+ books in my hand luggage last month!!

The Nook is OK, and considerably cheaper than the Kindle, it uses a different format of e-book (Epub), so not compatible with the Kindle. I have owned both but find overall the Kindle to be generally faster and better ergonomically than the Nook.
