Thanks for the memories
« on: October 11, 2015, 22:23:53 PM »
I had heard this news before but it was confirmed by supacabby who is just back from Calis.

Letoon is to be flattened starting this week and a new modern block built. I don’t know if that just means the accommodation blocks – perhaps supacabby may be able to tells us.

I just think that this is such a dreadful shame. Yes the place has looked “tired” for a while now but nothing that a little tender loving care (as opposed to demolition) might have sorted.

I have said on here many times before but don’t mind repeating it, Letoon and all of it’s staff over the years provided us with such wonderful relaxing holidays year after year. There is no doubt that the staff helped to make Letoon what it was but so did the place itself – for us it always had this aura about it which we found intoxicating.

And, equally importantly, it was the perfect "bolthole" for the present Mrs H when she need to escape from me for two weeks and where I knew she would be "safe".

I dare say we will take a wander down next year to see what has been done but I fear the worst.

Certainly the end of an era for us.

Sad news H.  We stayed there when getting our place ready and found the welcome we got from the staff wonderful.  They were so kind and helpful and we noted that many people staying were return visitors.
We always said the Letoon had the best site of any Hotel in Calis.   Right on the prom but benefitting from being at the end of the prom, so nice and quiet in the evenings. The big bonus was the fabulous uninterrupted views.  We have often gone back for a meal and have always recommended the place.
I remember recently the family who owned it, took it back and upgraded it..  I wonder what has happened??
Very disappointing to see yet another well know place disappear.  :'( :(

Well said John, can echo all that you have said, and the fact that we have made so many friends (including yourself & Brenda of course!) over the years, and of course the staff were very special!
End of an era indeed.

It's happening all over H and it's been happening for a while.

The quaint and rough around the edges we all fell in love with is slowly being bought, demolished and replaced by speculators coming down from Ankara and Istanbul with their big modern plans for the future of quaint old Calis Beach. It is not for us to complain or protest (not that you are), we can just accept it as progress and perhaps remember the endearing past.

When the entire bay looks like Benidorm (again nothing wrong with Benidorm!!) I will wander between the high rise hotels of Koca Calis, and remember the beach restaurant the Birlik - and how, when it got a bit scruffy, they'd get the rake out and redo the floor :D

Reading on the net tonight that The Ceren, Seketur and Letoon have all been bought by two Brothers..The Liberty Group and they plan to build 4-5 Star Hotels on the three sites.   Don't know how true this is though.

Oh no I hope they are not going to try and commercialise this beautiful quaint little place which is honesty my favourite place in the world. Or make them all inclusive as the local restaraunts will start to struggle Rhui told up in August that tourism was down by half this year and will probably be the same next year as thompson have cut there flights to Dalaman which will also inflate the prices with other airlines

Time moves on and nothing can stand in the way of modernisation. I do think we are partly to blame ourselves though. When the majority of us first started holidaying in Calis it was superbly antiquated and trapped in its own timewarp. Within a few years more and more of us descended on our little bit of paradise and the worse thing we did (and still do some extent) was to start preaching how cheap it is, the food, the shops, the markets, just about everything really. The locals soon caught on, started upping prices and the big boys from Ankara and Istanbul started to move in. Everybody got greedy, put rentals up and the bar owners who gave us the most hospitality were soon priced out!

It's sad to see all the old favourites come tumbling down but we'll give it a go again next year. Who knows, we may even Semi-retire out there again in a couple of years   ;)

I know that space where the accommodation sits at the moment is extremely limited but would it really be outwith the wit of man to "replicate" the two rows of chalets with the beautiful gardens.

Just wondering when they will start to build on the land next to our apartment behind the Ceren which is all part of the bigger plan so we believe.  They have already cleared most of the trees during the summer.

I know I have posted about this before but this is what made Letoon a 5 star hotel for us. A surprise cake for the present Mrs H's birthday which was nearly always spent at Letoon. Lovely gesture was it not
