Title: Rip off jewellers
Post by: micky mouse on August 28, 2012, 15:42:05 PM
I had a phone call from a friend this morning informing me that his grand daughter got married in olu deniz a couple of weeks ago and on a visit to a reputable jewellers in fethiye they purchased two white gold wedding bands for there marriage at a cost of in access of £500.00.On returning to the uk they took there wedding rings to be valued and were told that they were virtually worthless they were stung. At present i do not know the name of the jewellers but i will have more info on the 12th,september as my friend will be bringing out the rings, reciepts, etc to me.I have contacted a friend of mine who is a jeweller as i am out to turkey in the morning and he is going to try and help me get there money back. All though at present they may get there money back from there credit card so i will have to wait and see.So people as we all know most turkish people are honnest but theres always one shark out there so be aware. When i know the jewllers in question i will name and shame.

Have they taken the rings to another jeweller in England for valuation? there are also unscrupulous people in England you know...

Good point Tinx.

I would take it to a gold house and ask them for a scrap price - they always test to see if it's real gold and what carat. If they are 'virtually worthless' then they are probably gold plated or something and this will show in the valuation.

or possibly made of a mix of golds from scrap- that happened to me once and they said the texture under close scrutiny was like that of a crunchie bar! Fortunately the diamond was straight and clear! I can tell you i had a few heart stopping moments there!

We always use Telemessos Gold at the end of the Marina.
Think we will be doing a valuation when we get home although we always get a certificate

I think you will get a decent valuation here

My daughter bought a lovely solitaire diamond ring in Telmessos Gold which she had valued when she returned to Uk. They valued it at the same amount as she paid for it. I think Jewellers are not so cheap in Turkey as they used to be, but they do have a huge variety and are prepared to alter or make one to your personal design. Telmessos are a very respectable business in my humble opinion.

The gold price was at a worldwide high, it has gone down a little lately, however, as the gold price is worldwide it's not going to be cheaper in Turkey. However, you do get great craftmanship and you can design your own piece of jewellery which is made very quickly.

I have friends who always used to wait till their Turkish holiday to buy jewellery because it used to be much cheaper than UK. whatever the world price of gold at the time.

...and there's still a huge variety some quite unusual. As well as being able to design it yourself they have it ready for you in next to no time!  Hopefully this rip-off shop is just a one off and doesn't put others off altogether.

I am saddened to read this.
Hopefully the shop can be named and shamed soon.
It's a disgraceful way to treat people.

I agree with Tinx though - I would get a second valuation before naming and shaming. How do you know it's not a rip of merchant in the UK telling porkies? It probably isn't but do you want to ruin someone's business on one valuation?

Take them to sell on as scrap gold. If it's real gold they will be worth what they are worth. If it's a con then they will be worthless. Obviously allow for the workmanship when comparing the values. It won't cost anything to get the gold content checked and valued.

Went into town today to have a look as outlaws out for 2 weeks and to be honest every shop we went in said price of gold has gone up 5 fold in recent times. One shop even knew sis in laws jewellry was bought here and another knew where my Mrs got one of her rings from too. But not many of them were in bartering mode like 6=7 years ago. Anyone any reccomendations??

We have used Kilim in the Passpatur for the last 20 years.  It is in the narrow street near the Car Cemetery, if you approach from the promenade it is on the right hand side before the bars.

He has always seen the "bigger picture" - wants repeat business so never starts with silly prices and is not pushy.

Phil bought me a lovely ring from Zumrut in Calis Beach last week. Sedat did come down in price and did tell us if we did not get double the valuation (which I know we will) he would give us our money back.. No fear, I love it too much. My son bought his Fiancee her Wedding Ring also in Zumrut and one of her friends got a ring made to her exact specifications.  She comes from Malta and had asked there and told us they had quoted double what she paid Sedat.
I am not saying you now get great bargains in Turkey anymore, but you do get lovely quality pieces and can design your own if you wish.
We also asked for and got fully documented receipts stating exactly what we had bought.

That's a good point about the documentation Jacqui.

When we were over recently, as always, we got documentation from Infinity.
