where does one get that rate, changed £300 in exchange office on main street in Fethiye the other day and it was 2.65ytl, i can get that in silver or gold shop in Calis, Alan

I know that a lot of people used to go to the ice cream parlour( dondurma?)on the front.The rate of exchange was good.Unfortunately,I don't know if he is still there.

The currency rates quoted on the page can come from a variety of sources, e.g. Yahoo Finance, IMF etc, depending on what is the most accessible that day. They're merely a guide to the current state of the currency market and not a definitive exchange rate. Although saying that, I think it was showing 2.67YTL a couple of days ago so 2.65YTL isn't that far out.

I'm working on an updated Snitz modification that gets the rates from the Turkish Central Bank but having a few problems with the license for the data feed. Personally I don't think their figures will be much different to those from Yahoo etc, but it will be a live rate - as opposed to the delayed rate (by about 20mins I think) it is just now.

Alan,

I think the exchange rate is what you will get if you transfer money or take it out of the hole in the wall. Usually the 'tourist rate' is what you get in the exchange shops etc. They may state 'no commission' but they make their money by giving you a few points under the official exchange rate.

I suppose everyone has to make a living.

went into a thomas cook shop to exchange a few quid to get me a few beers when i am over shortly,soon said no thanks and left, 2.3tl to the £1.i will wait till i am over there before exchanging anything.

As Stuart has said. Change in one of the banks.Less risk and always a better exchange rate than the money changers.

we changed our money at finans bank and got 2.71tl,but i see it is slightly higher today
