New Project - English books needed
« on: December 12, 2013, 09:20:09 AM »
Some time ago Oznur (Angel) at the Nil Bar told Peter, Chairman of the 3C’s, about a planned project  in Gunlukbasi, which she thinks is really worthwhile, but needs help to get started.

As he had few details of what it was about, earlier this week, he  met with  retired teachers Yaşar and Arzui Erkimen who are trying to set up an English learning House in a small building in the Gunlukbasi area, close to the wedding circle in Calis.  This kind-hearted couple,  who are registered with  Fethiye Belediye,   have taken a long term lease on a small ground floor premises, which they are presently funding from their own pocket,  where they  and another teacher intend to give free English lessons to the needy children who live in the Gunlukbasi/Catalarik area.  These children, some of whom are bright but whose parents are unable to afford to pay for extra tuition  for them,  would be able to attend the learning centre outside of their normal school hours. They hope to begin by helping 10 children but eventually they hope that this will increase to 40 or 50 children.  It is Yaşar’s dream to enable these disadvantaged youngsters to get a better start in life.

The 3C’s feel that this is a really worthwhile local project, and at their meeting yesterday, agreed to give it their support  by providing desks and other set up equipment for the centre.  Some members have also said that they would give up a few hours of their time to have conversation classes with the children.

One of the things that the learning house needs to get going is books.  If any forum members are coming out to Calis and have a small space in their suitcase, we would really appreciate donations of children’s English books  suitable for ages  4 to 9, as although some of the children will be older than this, a lot will be starting with basic reading.  The books do not necessarily have to be new, good condition second hand books will do.  These can be dropped off at the 3C’s charity shop at Eyna restaurant or at the Nil Bar, who are also supporting this project.  Thank you

We have picked up a few books to bring over. Is the 3Cs shop open on the 23rd? If so, we will drop them off then.

Sorry, Nick11, we're closed from this Friday until 6th January, but you can leave them with Erhan or Nalan at the Eyna & they will make sure that we get them. Many thanks

How long will you be collecting them for?  How about May next year, we're not out until then.

Ok, thanks Pi55y, will start to collect a few to bring out with us.  I'm quite passionate about introducing book reading to young children.  My 2 year old grandson loves his books and goes to the library every couple of weeks to get some new ones.  It's lovely to be able to help the underprivileged and more needy children of the area to begin to read for themselves.

A big thanks to Barrie and Shirley who sent out some new  books for the younger children last week.  Also a big thanks to whoever dropped off a set of English children's classics at our charity shop recently (sorry but I do not know who it was).  Yasser whose brainchild the English Learning Centre is, as well as teaching the children from the books, wants to start an English book library where the children can borrow a book to take home.

The 3C's have now ordered new desks and chairs for the centre as well as whiteboards and coathooks.  We have also provided them with a dvd player and English learning dvds to accompany the television set recently donated by some kind supporters.

As mentioned before, this is an ongoing project so if anyone could squeeze an English children's book or two into their suitcase when coming out  (they do not have to be new so long as they are in good condition) , it will be greatly appreciated   :).
