Title: Log on fault.
Post by: John H on September 05, 2012, 15:57:00 PM
When I attempt to log on I get an 'incorrect password' warning on the initial attempt.
The password is not wrong and I am always allowed on at the second attempt.
It has been like this for around a week.
Does this problem exist for anyone else?

Yes same here, I type in the correct password but as soon as I hit "sign in" it disappears and get the "incorrect password" warning.

I can't make this happen at all - are you logging in with the two boxes top right or via the Log In on the blue menu?
Title: Re: Log on fault.
Post by: littlereddevil on September 05, 2012, 17:54:18 PM
Same for me. I log in top right
Title: Re: Log on fault.
Post by: marina on September 05, 2012, 17:56:45 PM
Same thing happening to me, for about 3 or 4 days now.

Start by trying to log on in the two boxes top right, then get the incorrect password message and log on ok, with same password.

Very strange.....I don't have this problem. Could someone try erasing their Internet history/cookies (and stored passwords if possible).

Ok...Another question.....

For those that it is happening to...what browser are you using (eg Internet Explorer)

Other than Keith and Myself...anyone this is NOT happening to?

Ok, what I've done may fix for some but there is a permanent fix which is a bit time consuming - this is a known (but fairly rare) bug with the forum software.  We'll sort it out in next day or so.

From today when I had to log on this morning (top right option) and again just now when I had to log in again after going out.

This time I have filled in the full section and ticked the box to allow me to stay logged in this time so maybe that will make a difference.

I will test it now and report back...

OK I restarted the computer - didn't clear cookies or anything - and opened up and remain signed in.

Title: Re: Log on fault.

I always have the box ticked to stay logged in all the time but hasn't worked at all since Monday.
I use Firefox
Title: Re: Log on fault.
Post by: nichola on September 06, 2012, 09:13:45 AM
I meant to say I use Chrome and also the section in the middle of the page with the box that has the how long do you want to stay logged on for had 60 mins showing and this remained showing 60 mins after I checked the stay logged in box.

If there are any problems after 60 mins will let you know   :)

Hope we are helping...

I don't log out so never had a problem until this morning when I found I was logged out.  Tried to log in top right hand side and it wouldn't accept the password, took me to the 2nd screen where I ticked the 'Stay logged in' box and it accepted it.  Immediately closed the forum down and re opened it.  Took me straight in.  I don't use cookies by the way.    :)

Scunner, we have a couple of smf forums and had the same problem on 2 but not a third, we eventually found out it was down to a php 5 upgrade on 2 of our servers (hence not the third) After searching for a fix which seems like forever I found this and it's cured

This is the code change I mentioned previously - saying that, there are a couple of other fixes for this issue, if it happens on your third server and this doesn't cure it let me know and I'll pass on what I know.

So, changes made.  Those affected, please clear your cookies and restart browser.

If still happening, let us know.

Had the log in problem for about 5 days, finally went on as a "guest" and checked out this post. I've always had my forum password "saved" by Firefox. Have now gone through the "change password" process in an attempt to cure the problem. Now logged in of course, will let you know if I lose it again.

Also because I am now always logged on no new new posts are getting through to each section?

Ok, so now when I click 'log in' for the 2nd time it says 'an error has occurred you must wait 2 seconds to log in again'.  Then you go back to the last page where the details are stored and log in again and get through!  At the moment anyway!

You have eight hours to edit posts - this maximum time was introduced when we moved to the new style dorum to prevent members doing what some have done in the past - deleting their own posts and questions one by one, making dozens of topics very difficult to follow. After 8 hours the modify link is gone. Under 8 hours you can edit/modify using the link as shown:

The frequency of it happening is definitely well down in the error log - and it seems to be the same members who are being caught over and over again. Perhaps the ones that haven't cleared their cookies etc.., not sure but quite possibly.

Scunner,

to give you an idea, over the last few weeks I have cleared cookies, tried IE9 and Chome, and even changed to a new PC (for other reasons) without any solution.

I have been running IE8 on W7 for about a week now and the problem "went away" a couple of days ago.

As somebody who works in IT, I know how ridiculous that last sentance sounds.
