Title: The effects of drink on your sleep
Post by: stoop on November 08, 2019, 13:28:39 PM
I posted this on my FB page but thought it might be of interest to some members on here. Hopefully the images come up in order but if not you can easily work out the days I didn't or did drink:

I have a sleep tracker and can’t believe how much difference having a few drinks makes to my resting heart rate.

After a few months the pattern is obvious. I don’t drink many nights of the week and my average HR is around 57-60bpm.

When I’ve been out and had a few beers (only about 4) then the average bpm rises to around 70 or higher! Over 8 hours that’s around an extra 4,800 beats😱

Is my maths correct?.

An extra 10bpm = 10x60 miniutes in one hour = 600 extra bpm

x 8 hours = 8x600 = 4,800

So I guess someone who drinks every night is not only disrupting their sleep pattern but putting extra strain on their heart 💔

For the avoidance of doubt I went out on three of the nights showing here and drank around four pints of lager. The other nights were booze free.

Here ends today’s lesson 🤔

Drinking has the opposite effect on me.

I usually get up 2 or 3 times during the night due to an enlarged prostate.

However, after a couple of rather large 'snifters' of vodka or gin, I can go through the night with out any detrimental effects.

Do you monitor your sleep with a tracker? Heart rate? Respiratory rate?

I have an enlarged prostate as well but mange to go all night without getting up most nights. However even though I appear to sleep well the stats show my heart is working much harder to get rid of the alcohol.

No Stoop. I've had a couple of sessions with the 24 hour monitors for blood pressure which kept me awake all bloody night. I haven't bothered with any other forms of monitoring.
