Title: Favourite Sayings
Post by: swindsor on May 26, 2020, 20:26:04 PM
I've had a privilege of working with lots of older people over the years and some of their sayings are priceless.   Here are a few of my favourites: -

* It'll not always be dark at seven (better days will come)
* There's them that'll work and them that'll let 'em (this was a saying my late Grandma used about the work shy)
* He's not as big as 'apeth of copper (referring to someone small)
* They must think folks are people (they must think we are daft)
* The sights you see when you haven't got your gun (look at the state of that)
* Look at the state of that and the price of meat (again, look at the state of that)
* Don't let that sun fool you (when the sun shines before May and you're tempted to wear summer clothes)
* Don't waste a ship for 'apeth of tar (if a job's worth doing then it's worth doing right)
* You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink (you can do your best to help someone but it's ultimately up to them)
* If you ever do "owt for nowt, do it for thissen" (translation from Yorkshire dialect: "If you ever do anything for nothing, do if for yourself" ;)
* It's a bit dark over Bill's mother's (the sky looks a bit dark in the distance/it looks like it's going to rain)
* God's good (what goes around, comes around)
* When robin's are here, loved ones are near (robins represent loved ones no longer with us)

These are just a selection that come to mind but I'd love to hear yours.

Do unto others before the fuc**rs do it to you.

Choose the biggest one in the group. Hit him hard, and run like ***k.

Both bits of advice from my dad.

"Buy the best pair of shoes and the best bed you can afford...because when you not in one, you're in the other!"
Courtesy of my nan.

"Buy cheap, buy twice", from untold adults when I was a kid (always stuck with me to buy quality)

"You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you're looking for a ruby
In a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coupe de Ville hiding
At the bottom of a Cracker Jack box"
from the inimitable Meatloaf (Two out of Three Ain't Bad)

I find it sad that a lot of old sayings and dialect are dying out, especially Lancashire sayings. My grandma had a very broad accent and used to say things like waather for water and oil for hole. We have a word agate which can be amusing to explain, it means she/he was saying “ she was agate and he was agate” haven’t a clue where it originated from. If we were rooting(looking) through drawers my mum would tell us off and say there were layhorns to catch meddlers in the drawers.
He’s not as green as he is cabbage looking
Sandwich short of a picnic
It’s cracking flags( very sunny)
She’s up and down like piffy on a rock cake (hanging about with no purpose)
I have taught my granddaughter to say to her daddy, hey up daddy, got to keep the Lancashire heritage going especially as she lives in Warwickshire.

I worked in Wigan for a couple years and enjoyed the food as well as the local dialect. I still make a Wigan Kebab when I'm feeling a bit peckish. (For those that don't know, that's a meat and potato pie in a buttered barm cake / oven bottom roll.)

If talking about heritage-based sayings, there are a few from my Texas home:

"Dance with the one that brung ya", meaning "see it through to the end"
"Don't change horses midstream", meaning to manage the risk of changing a person, process or thing
"Can't dance" in response to a request to do something, meaning "I might as well do it, because I can't dance (and rather be dancing instead-we love to dance and not that linedance rubbish)
"All hat and no cattle" is particularly pointed at "dimestore cowboys" who have the look of a rancher but no ranch
"Crooked as a dog's hind leg" means someone is dishonest (often related to lawyers, such as Dewey, Cheatham and Howe)
Wearing your "Sunday go to meeting" or Church clothes, or getting "all gussied up" is getting dressed up for some event (usually includes wearing your good boots, not your cow-poke boots)
Having a "come to Jesus meeting" is to tell someone off or to get someone straight on a topic

...and lots, lots more!

When I was in the Police a colleague would say Faint heart never F****d a fat pig which I took to mean don’t knock it till you’ve tried it or maybe I’m wrong

It was "Faint heart never f****d a fair lady" in my time. But I can understand the Police - Pig connection.  :)
