Rising or Falling Cost of Living on Holiday
« on: May 01, 2013, 17:52:56 PM »
Reading and artical in the Times travel section make me think about the thread on CFB about the rising costs of holidaying/living in Turkey and those Turkey lovers who are choosing other destinations because of their increasingly good value, Spain and Portugal who have been mentioned on a regular basis are an example.

These costs were based on a typical basket of 10 holiday purchases and against a weaker pound, which is why those members have chosen to go alternative destinations.

With peoples finances streched you can see why they make that decision.

1 Euro a pint against an increasingly expensive Efes.........I know what I would want to pay.

By the way how much is Efes at the moment?    ;)   ;)

HOLIDAY LIVING COSTS
                            2012       2013
Albufeira, Portugal    £54.45    £46.34
Javea, Spain            £58.95    £47.14
Orlando, USA            £73.75    £58,16
Sharm, Egypt            £76,25    £62.83
Corfu, Greece            £65.55    £64.45
Paphos, Cyprus    £58.90    £65,13
Nice, France            £69,11    £80,93
Bodrum, Turkey    £83.55     £90.15
Sorrento, Italy            £77.30    £101.79
Dubai, UAE            na_            £10.3.23

I would be interested to see the breakdown of these figures, to see what is included and what it is based on - just beer price?   :) Is this the Post Office survey that used to be done before? A few years ago I was asked by my company to compile figures for this survey, I asked for which resort, Istanbul, middle of the country? Surveyors answer was we just want one to cover all! So the highest or the lowest? Middle would not be correct if they quoted Oludeniz for example. Some of the Bodrum peninsula is very expensive and just stating Bodrum does not explain where these prices are taken from - there are many resorts.
I find the figures for Paphos and Corfu surprising, but have no personal knowledge of prices at either.
As far as I know, most hotels in Sharm are AI so how can they be compared to a resort that has many BB establishments? People would not have to eat or drink outside the hotel and many would not do so. Even if you ventured out, it would only be occasionally?

Lies, damned lies and statistics..... mind you the result - based on like for like sales year on year - are interesting, in that they appear to confirm people's experience on this site, both in Turkey and other holiday destinations.

Agree with UBT and teetee - you can make these things show whatever you want them to show but there is indeed no disputing that Spain and Portugal are getting cheaper while Turkey is getting more expensive. I doubt any of our 10,000+ members will come and dispute that particular statistic?  :)

I've looked at these 'baskets of everyday stuff you buy' and much of it we don't. Such as sun cream for example. However if it includes things like food, coffee, beer, wine and the like then Portugal is indeed very cheap. However things like excursions are far more expensive than in Turkey.

We brought money back from both destinations last year. We ate much cheaper than normal in Turkey due to knowing where not to go and eating at home. In Portugal even a top class meal will only set you back £30 with wine and a free port. Makes Sat look very expensive when its 20ytl for a G&T (2012 prices) and 40ytl for a steak.
