Computer help needed - partitioning drive?
« on: January 11, 2006, 06:39:49 AM »
Hi All
We just had to buy a new faster computer to run a specialist piece of equipment. We were just going to use it for this equipment as I didn't want to go onto the Internet & stand the chance of getting a virus. I really only needed a 20GB drive or less.

The salesman however persuaded us to buy a 250GB hard drive, which we did get on a great offer. He told us we could partition the drive, therefore we could go online & if we were unfortunate enough to get a virus it wouldn't affect the business part of the machine. He said it was easy to do - just put in a different operating system -XP Pro & the computer would automatically ask us if we wanted to partition. He also said that the computer would run more quickly if we did this.

Computer is sitting in its box waiting for us to unwrap at moment.

Questions
Is it really this easy?
Does each partition need an operating system on it?
Presumably just 1 partition (C) should be bootable, just a thought but would it be better to keep any internet access away from this drive in case of viruses?
If we want to use pictures on each partition do we have to have the camera software on each? I use Finepix viewer.
Do we need works in each partition?
Lots more questions like what are the downfalls of partitioning?
Should the partition used for Internet be one of the smallest.

He suggested different partitions for home use, work, downloaded music, pictures etc. Anybody think of anything more?

As the computer I'm using now is having great problems - it keeps telling me I have insufficient memory + the USB ports have given up along with the parallel therefore I can't print anything out I'd like to use the new one if it really is easy to do this.

Any help appreciated from all you computer literate folk.
Thanks in anticipation
Linda
