Now I know everyone will probably think I must be extremely sad/anal/pedantic/need to get out more etc but at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old woman I feel I must take this opportunity to talk about one of my pet hates...
Basically I have noticed for some time now that people (including members of this wonderful forum) are increasingly using the word "barter", when in fact they mean "haggle". Forum members are not alone in this - I have even noticed presenters on TV shows getting this wrong!
In an effort to reclaim the word haggle - I am now starting to mount a campaign to promote its proper use! If anyone is interested - I have included below the OED definitions of these two words.
haggle
... verb : dispute or bargain persistently, especially over a price
barter
... verb : exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services
So now I will just sit back & wait to be shot down in flames.......!!!!
