Title: What on earth is happening to Turkey?
Post by: JohnF on April 13, 2017, 09:17:38 AM
That's the question posed today on the BBC web site.  Mark Lowen has done a good job with this article/slideshow and, other than one dodgy source (Sabah) for data, pretty much sums up the state of play across the country in a balanced manner.

Well worth a look.

Well worth spending time to read through it.

With recent polls estimating this weekend's referendum vote at YES 51% NO 49% (give or take a nibble) I guess we should hope that this article is right when it suggests that a lot of people who intend to vote NO don't want to say so.

Many pollsters are suggesting that the "undecided" element within the polls are mostly NO voters, who are reluctant to voice their choice in public for fear of being branded a "terrorist and traitor".

I read somewhere yesterday that even if it's a NO vote it will still happen.

What's the point I wonder?

How can it be a NO vote?  The result was decided weeks ago  ;) , its now just a matter of letting the people think it's in their hands - or is that being cynical?

John do you know if anyone independent will over see counting?
Or am I totally deluded?

Scary stuff.  It is very sad and we love our place, but wonder how long for with the current political situation.
We are possibly facing selling up sometime in the near future as this guy seems to be intent on runing Turkey his own way.
I am so glad we changed our minds about moving out permanently.

If the antics that went on during the General Election and the counting of the votes are anything to go by, it'll be "interesting".  :)

Yep, you're being deluded  :)

Here's an article that sums up what the situation is, or is meant to be:

Guarding the ballot box (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/guarding-the-ballot-box.aspx?pageID=449&nID=110383&NewsCatID=503)

I guess it'll be the usual, allegations of electoral fraud irrespective of the result - but when you already own the judiciary, I don't suppose it will matter that much.

Here's another couple of interesting reads:

Read it all.

Absolutely gripping stuff.

Thanks for posting it John.,

It seems likely that Turkey isn't going to be like "my" Turkey in the relatively near future.

Most Turks may well feel more comfortable with Erdogan's visions than the prospect of becoming a "modern" Turkey - as was proposed a few years ago when we saw them seemingly angling for EU membership.....

........which, in truth, I doubted Turkey was ever destined to become.

Ever more unlikely in the foreseeable future.

I've been saying for years (for different reasons each time) that this might be our last holiday to Turkey for some time - then the next I know I can't resist and have the flights booked for the next one.

But I do have a deep feeling of inevitability this time - I think we are on the verge of a hugely major and significant change in the way of life in Turkey - it reminds me of those old photos of Westernised sociable countries like Iran, Lebanon, Afghanistan etc side by side with the fundamental Islamic states they became.

I have great admiration for Colwyn, who despite his long and deep relationship with Turkey now finds it difficult to justify continuing to visit a place with such a poor humans rights record. I understand and appreciate the sentiment but I can't muster enough anger or outrage in that to prevent me holidaying there.

For me the fear is something else - a fear that either Turkey will no longer look to welcome us to holiday there, or it will become a place we don't want to holiday in.

In any event, we will thoroughly enjoy our 2017 holiday in Calis and Fethiye, and hope we won't be talking about all our times there in terms of how it used to be in Turkey.

Some well written articles, which have made interesting reading.  If its Yes (which in my mind it will be) and Turkey changes dramatically, us Ex Pats have the enviable choice to go back to our country of origin.  The no supporters will not have this option.......
