Title: The Rugby World Cup Fund Raiser
Post by: Highlander on August 14, 2015, 18:53:19 PM
You may need to get a cuppa or a jarge gin and tonic right about now but please stay with it because it's for a good cause.

(Lots of new members since we last did something like this, so please feel free to join in).

Now that the 3C’s Committee and their helpers are taking a well deserved break, or what passes for a break in their case, I thought it was time we tried to raised some money for the children.

Part 1:

Following the huge success of the Football World Cup supporters bus, I have hired one for the Rugby World Cup.

Tickets are £ 1 each.

Your ticket entitles you to “sponsor” one of the participating teams.

I have randomly allocated the numbers 1 to 20 to the teams taking part. You choose a number and the corresponding team is yours.

If your team doesn’t reach the Knock-Out Stages, you will have to forfeit £10.

If your team gets to the quarter  finals, it will cost you £ 9

If your team loses in the semi finals, the forfeit will be £ 8

If your team is runner-up, you will be asked to donate £ 7.

If your team wins the competition, you win £ 10.

Everyone following so far ? – yes – excellent.

Now for Part 2:

Alongside your team sponsorship, I will be asking you to support Scotland – yes I know but it will raise more for the kids than supporting England. So here how this part works.

If Scotland do not reach the group stages (highly unlikely) you will be asked to put £ 7 into the kitty,

If Scotland get knocked out in the Quarter Finals it will be £ 6.

£ 5 into the kitty if we lose in the Semi Finals, £ 4 if we finish fourth, £ 3 for third, £ 2 if we are runners-up and £ 1 if we win the whole thing.

You can take part in Part 1, Part 2 or both but I really would like at least 20 in each.

There are only 20 teams in Part 1 so book early to avoid disappointment  :)

No thank you marina - it's a very long competition starting on 18 September with the final not being played until 31 October.

I will update people as the tournament progresses.

I will only send the monies raised to the 3 C's once the competition is finished.

Have to say H.  I did not read this post for a while as like Echogirl the title put me off as I am not a Rugby fan and usually do not read anything about the subject.   Perhaps you should include  "Calis" in the title ??

Yes, but a lot of people just click into "Show unread posts since my last visit"  So you don't realise which category it is under, as it does not give a category you look at the lists of posts and just select the ones that catch your interest.      :)
This is why, once I saw "Rugby"  I did not bother looking at it, took me a while to see it.
Obviously you and Sadler ( my best follower,) have not noticed this,  look for yourself H and you will see what I mean   ;
Glad I posted,  it is has drummed up some more members to view your great, as always, Charity Fundraising.  I do hope you sell your last 3 tickets.   :)

It appears that some of the most prolific posters (administrators and moderators included) have become very quiet on this one.

Perhaps they feel they have done enough.........or for some reason don't support your cause.

It really doesn't seem a lot to ask and the cause is hardly one of the controversial ones.

From what I understand, every penny goes directly to the local charity and not 80+% towards administrative costs.

In short, even if I win the "big money" (most likely New Zealand, South Africa or Australia) there's not a shred of me that couldn't immediately put my winnings back in there.

Not many tickets to go - and not long to go.

You are coming across as a serious knob.

You know phuck all about me, Keith or Steve (admins) or any of the hardworking moderators - and you especially know phuck all about the money donated, the tasks undertaken for and on behalf of local charities and good causes by the Admins & Mods.

Please feel free to make your apology now...

I do a lot of work for chairidee, don't like to talk about it though mate.

Maybe you should have been here for the 12 years before you joined so you could comment based on facts rather than a fairly pathetic attempt at provocation. We've seen it all before, countless times and in fairness from some real pro trolls, it's the amateurs like you that are so tiresome.

Wind your neck in now. If you attempt to sabotage a wonderfully well meaning charity fundraising post to try and stir things up again - and get in the way of Highlander's tireless work to help the kids who have next to nothing, we'll ensure it will be the last time you do such a low thing on here.

It appeared that many high profile posters haven't bought any tickets.

Thought there be a chance for them to lead by example.

But hey - apologies wherever they're due.

Far from sabotaging a post - merely making an observation on those who have not come forward.

stuart T

I normally put this sentence at the end of my first post on charity matters....

"PLEASE REMEMBER taking part in these things is NOT a condition of CBF membership and that there is no requirement whatsoever to participate".

For some reason I didn't this time but it is a fact.

It matters not one jot if a member has made 4 posts or 4000 posts. Nor does it that they are an administrator or a moderator. It is, and always has been a free choice to take part.

I can tell you however that there are people on here who have sent me large sums of money totally anonymously.

If you want to know who leads by example on here can I respectfully suggest you search Bozalan on here and then come back with any further observations which you might have.

Pi55y thank you so much, I am very grateful.

But I have to be honest and say that I would have much preferred that other members, other than pi55y and her husband, had taken the last two seats. given the massive time and effort that they (Chrissie and Peter) both give to the charity.

Just because we didnt buy the seats John doesn't mean that I and others don't contribute in other ways that brings them in other income.   We and I am sure others also have their own favourite charities back in the UK... carry on. What you do is admirable... much love Anne and Barrie. X

Mercury - I am also acutely aware of the massive amount of time and effort you gave to the charity over many years.

I am also aware that lots of people, including you and Barrie give to charity in many different ways.

I just thought that there would have been some new Forum members who had received free helpful advice and who would have considered participating.

I apologise for any offence caused to you and Barrie.

Know exactly what you mean H.  This is a great free Forum where so many questions are asked about the local area and We i.e. Phil and I would have been lost in Calis without this wonderful Forum. We support a few Charities at home too, but always like to give a little to the Calis Charities as they do great work in the area we love to spend time in.  It would be nice to see some more of the members supporting a Calis Charity too.
We know all the regulars who always support the Calis Charities, so not saying anything against them at all.
I also think whatever we give we get back in lots of other ways.    ;)

There will always be those who give and those who do not.. Reading FB. seems like there are loads of people who think that animals are more important than children but that is their perrogative...Never seen as many animal charities, cats homes etc.that have sprung up since the start of Animal Aid. .. This is NOT a criticism by the way. Just an observation...

As I said earlier....

"PLEASE REMEMBER taking part in these things is NOT a condition of CBF membership and that there is no requirement whatsoever to participate".

I would hope that I never come across as badgering people into taking part. It is entirely up to individuals where they do so or not.

Just because people do not take part in this or any other fund raiser does not mean they do not contribute to charities in a vast variety of other ways.

Again, as I said earlier there are people on this Forum who have not taken part in any of my fund raisers but have sent me substantial donations to the 3C's anonymously or have made donations in Calis again anonymously.

So can I suggest that we keep this thread to the matter in hand and debate charity giving elsewhere and at another time.

We do have a full bus and I'll give you more details later

As I said earlier....

"PLEASE REMEMBER taking part in these things is NOT a condition of CBF membership and that there is no requirement whatsoever to participate".

Not least because the forum has no direct link with the charity and the charity has no direct link with the forum.

We give local charities a section to use to publicise events etc, and are happy to do so.  Some take advantage of this more than others.

Participation in 3C fundraisers is not a requirement for CBF membership, we are not the charity.

Not the case marina but I know for a fact that wouldn't bother you one iota and that you're primary interest is in helping the kids.

Good luck in the competition.

Thank you so much for your continued support.  :)

Ok, have gone back and read your original post again H and understand it now (I think!).   :)
As long as the kids are the winners that's what really counts - but come on All Blacks!!   ;D

I can't see groups A & B on your chart H, neither can I enlarge the sheet to make the text readable so I have no idea where I am on there.

Not sure why that is hamlet - you have the United States Group B  with South Africa, Samoa, Scotland and Japan.

Everyone's first games (I hope :-[)

I could not of course advocate small wagers between combatants with the proceeds going to the charity.

Got in today and looked at rugby score 54-9 ,4 points and and a bonus point. "Yes" thought I was back in it before looking up John's team sheets and realising wrong south american team. My team is not Argentina but Uruguay and after their first game I will probably be joining you on the first bus home Anne

marina - there are 4 Groups with 5 times in each. The top two in each group go through to the knock out stages.

The Group games do not finish until Sunday 11 October so technically every team is still in the competition until then.

I will update then.

:) - yes it's been a long tournament so far echogirl1 and still has a way to go yet.

You have Ireland who played very well today to top their group with 4 wins out of 4.

They did however sustain injuries to a couple of key players which might yet prove crucial.

You play Argentina (who were scintillating today) next Sunday in Cardiff at one in the afternoon. A three hours before Scotland thrash Australia  ;)

Good luck  :)

Just returned from four wonderful weeks in Fethiye.

My apologies to the administrators and moderators I offended with my postings regarding their entry in the rugby charity.

One - eyed comments made without any previous knowledge of their activities.

I re - read my postings and they were "knee jerk" reactions to the lack of support from those who have gained so much from the forum - myself included.

Scunner et al - neck wound in.

echogirl - your team Ireland play my team (Argentina) at the weekend.

If you fancy an extra £5.00 bet - winnings to the charity - I'd be happy to cough up.

I think you're favourite to win that one (in theory Ireland has a stronger team, even with the injuries)..........I can't lose really - I'm very much hoping Ireland win!

New Zealand 62 France 13

Well what can I say – marina goes through to the semi-finals with an absolutely awesome display by her All Blacks which sends captain squiffy off to enjoy his retirement.

It was a shame for France really because no-one would have lived with the magnificent All Blacks in that mood.

Sorry echo - cost you an extra fiver!

Who'd a thought it?  Not I.

Listening to the way Argentina played even Australia may have their work cut out in the semi.

Bit disappointed that there are no northern hemisphere sides in the semis and it seems that Scotland have strong grounds for feeling "robbed" today.

Only heard it on the radio but the pundits were less than impressed with the referee - especially over the last penalty.

Highlander - a real blow in the gut.

At least you can console yourself in Floridian luxury.

badger, pi55y, mr toky, MSB, jim fraser, hamlet, lizdev, chris35, MSB, jacqui harvey, lotty and phil5257 (who has already donated)

Quarter Final Exit: Donation = £ 16.00 (Ticket £ 1.00, Going out = £ 9.00, Scotland going out = £ 6.00)
strange, echogirl1, captain squiffy and toky

To all who are no longer in the competition, a huge thank you for taking part and for helping the children.   :)

Thanks to marina for her lovely gesture and to each of the following for taking part……..

bewva, badger, strange, pi55y, mr toky, lotty, MSB, toky, jim fraser, hamlet, marina, stuartT, lizdev, chris35, captain squiffy, echogirl1, phil5257 and Jacqui harvey

Thanks also to swindsor who didn’t manage to take part but contributed nonetheless.

But I very much want to round up this fund raiser by publicly acknowledging receipt of an extremely generous donation which was made some time ago by a member who wishes to remain anonymous. This is by no means the first time this member has made a substantial donation.  Thank you so very much for your continued support. One day I hope to be able to sing your praises from the roof tops    ;)

When I starting working on this I pitched the various amounts in the hope of raising £ 250.00.

But it seems I really will never learn because yet again I failed to factor in the generosity of CBF members.

I am delighted to report that the total you, CBF members have raised is in fact £ 500.00.

H

Heartfelt thanks to your goodself, both for your organisational & persuasive skills, from everyone at 3C's. It's another brilliant achievement that highlights, once again, the wonderful generousity of the CBF family.

Sorry to post something negative in a wonderfully positive topic but I note exactly the same list of members putting their hands in their pockets AGAIN.

What a shame so many take huge pleasure out of Turkey and never seem to value it enough to put something back, even a fiver to help people who will never get one holiday let alone an annual one.

I've said it  and now I will shut up.

Well done H and well done the usual suspects 8)

What to say - I find it difficult.

First thing for us to remember is that if there no was Calis Beach Forum we wouldn't be discussing who takes part and who doesn't. So thanks for the platform scunner

And as he (and I) always say - taking part in any fund raiser on here is not a condition of CBF membership.

I am always grateful for the support I am given on here and the continued support (along with Rachel's nod of approval) is what makes it all worthwhile.

All that having been said, there are substantially more members now than when we did the first fund raiser and when the "usual suspects" stepped up to the plate for the first time.

It seems inconceivable to me that some of those "new" members have not received good, sound advice on here which has helped them and/or simply derived hours of enjoyment from the Forum.

Does that suggest that it might be nice to give just a little to help kids who really do have next to nothing ? I have to leave that up to the individual because charity is a very personal thing.

I have to say that whether or not we can attract new participants will become apparent very, very soon because it's Advent Calendar time.  :)

bewva - many thanks your donation which was safely received

And I would like everyone to know that not only did marina forego her "prize" she sent money for the second part (Scotland's participation).

What a lovely lady - this is for you (http://s7.postimg.org/zdr3ky4cn/rose.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

Thank you Highlander    :)

You are right in saying that charity is a very personal thing and I certainly don't donate to every one that asks me to.  However in this case, because I am so grateful for my three gorgeous, healthy grandsons (4, 15 months and 9 months) who will hopefully never see the hardships and problems faced by the children that the 3C's work hard to help and support and, because we have had so many wonderful holidays in Calis and made many friends there, I feel privileged to be one of the many generous people on here who give a bit back and do something to help them.

What happened to that famous Maori singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa ? She always used to sing at these events.
Wonder was she there?
