Bat in our fireplace.
« on: September 23, 2011, 14:09:22 PM »
Can anyone help/advise please.  We've just noticed a small bat hanging in our glass fronted wood burning fireplace.  We think it's alive.  Does anyone know the best way to get it to a safe environment?  Phil reckons if he opens the glass door tonight the bat will just fly outside but I am not convinced and am terrified of having a bat flying around the house...yes...I am a wuss when it comes to flying creatures!  Help!!

Be careful about their bites, they may have rabies

Pick it up using gloves or a cloth and take it outside. Place it on a bush or on the top of a wall. It'll soon bugger off.

The bat was in a position where if we opened the door of the fire it could just fly out into our open plan house...plus we have pets who would, for sure, chase it.

I have to admit I am absolutely terrified of flying things.  I am hoping it will fly upwards, it's made a couple of attempts already.

Thanks for your replies...Des - I will call on your help to light our first fire this year ;)

Nearly 2 a.m here and the bat seems to have moved upwards into the chimney, cannot see him in the fireplace and the cats have lost interest.  I like to think he is flying free now :).
