Title: The Commonwealth Games
Post by: Highlander on July 26, 2014, 21:19:05 PM
Your views so far ?

I have been hugely impressed by the sportsmanship shown and by the Scottish people's appreciation of all winners

Glasgow is absolutely buzzing. I've never seen it so busy, so many nationalities, all appearing to be embrasing the city. Every open top tourist bus is full, upstairs and downstairs. I'm off to see the lawn bowls tomorrow and have to leave by 6.30 am to get there and through security checks for the start of the games at 8.45am.  :)

Yes the crowds are making it, as is the strong push by the home nations. I can't believe how much of it I am watching. Just one disagreement with you Eric, I don't enjoy the Judo, I have absolutely no idea what is going on - to the extent that the commentators are screaming "he's done it! he's done it!" - and till one stands up celebrating I have no clue which one has done it!!!

I believe that the organisers have missed a trick but not stopping the music for the second verse of the National Anthem and just let the crowd sing as they do at Murrayfield.

I used to play squash in the North West Middx league table and was thrilled to watch some fabulous games on here. Not often shown on TV, but fascinating.

Judo Player is what a person 'taking part' in the martial art of Judo is called, or more formally a Judoka.   ;)  I was never good enough to represent GB unfortunately, plus several injuries curtailed my further involvement.    :-[

Love the New Zealand rugby 7's reaction to defeat - sporting but second is last

Was up at 6am today and on our way by 6.50am to get to see the lawn bowls at Kelvingrove, beside the art gallery. What a backdrop! Loved nthe whole day apart from paying £16 for 2 burger rolls and 2 very small black coffees! Rip off catering :(

Either side of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, take a huge bow Glasgow you have done Scotland proud.

Wha's like us   :)

I thought the opening & closing ceremonies weren't bad relatively - in as much as they are generally a fairly rubbish disjointed set of things. The London 2012 opening ceremony gave us the entire history of the country whether we wanted it or not - and Glasgow if anything failed to show enough of Scotland's amazing attributes.

As for the event itself, I thought it was brilliant, and showed the World the Glasgow we know, not the Rab C Nesbitt one many believe they know.

I thought the emphasis of the Closing Ceremony should have been on the superb achievement of Glasgow rather than on some Aussie bimbo

Superb coverage by the beeb.

Quality presenters (apart from Inverdale of course) and pundits.

Rip off catering :(

Certainly was.  £4.50 for a 330ml bottle of Heineken, the same for Magners (330ml) and a small bottle (18.75cl) of wine around a fiver.  I seem to recall (bit hazy...) at London 2012 they also had extortionate prices for bottles but sold draft beer at around a fiver a pint and a 70cl bottle of wine for £15.

The catering prices seem it was run by Dalaman Airport?

Well, we're done and dusted.

I have to confess that I thought that the Glasgow Games would be a non-event.

How wrong could I have been.

The Commonwealth Games 2014 was a spectacular success with the host nation, it's athlete's, it's Clydesiders and most of all the people of Glasgow (on behalf of the whole of Scotland I trust) providing what is being universal described as "The Best Games ever".

Prince Imran summed it up for me when he described Glesga as " Pure, dead, brilliant"
.
