Title: Andy Murray is Number One
Post by: Highlander on November 05, 2016, 16:08:19 PM
OK his opponent withdrew and had didn't have to play but what a fantastic achievement from the boy from Dunblane.

Does being number one make him Britain's greatest sportsman - I think it might.

Nobody in particular springs to mind at the moment. However, Murray may be very good, but I don't think he's the greatest.

Do you mean current sportsman or greatest ever? Not that Murray would get there on either count in my book. I'll have a think about it for the greatest ever British sportsman.

My candidates would include  Mo Farah, Steve Redgrave and Chris Hoy.

Britain has a history of great cyclists, great athletes, great rowers, so to excel in a sport where we have not been great for  over 70 odd years and in the toughest era ever, then yes Andy Murray deserves all the accolades coming his way.  Despite what some might see as petulant behaviour when he's struggling in a match, it is rarely directed at his opponent, in fact I think he's one of the most honest and least arrogant sportsmen I've ever heard interviewed.
Had ranking points been awarded at the Rio Olympics (as they were at London 2012) Andy would already have been No 1 in the world, so fair play to him for the hard work he has put in this year.  If he does well at the end of year championships I can see him picking up SPOTY for the third consecutive year.

How can being rated No I make him Britain's greatest sportsman. It is just one sport, tennis. And how long will he be No1 for. Not long I fear.
Good achievement I agree. But no, It doesn't make him  Britain's greatest sportsman.Not in my eyes anyway.Far to many others have got an argument to be that.

Actually the best of that bunch was probably Madeley as he played in every position apart from keeper. Unsung hero I think.

But if I was to add a footballer other than Sir Bobby I would say John Charles. One of the all time greats.

Well done Andy, let's celebrate a great British Sportsman and stop bickering.
Glad to see he is No.1 in the World of Tennis, he has worked hard to achieve that and should be congratulated by everyone in Britain.
I also think he is a good candidate for No.1 Sportsman in the U.K at the moment as he has beaten the tennis world to get to his position.

I love F1 to and can understand you choosing Moss above the modern drivers such as Hamilton .Not that he isn't  a superb driver of the faster
modern cars. But in the earlier era's I think the cars then were far harder to drive so more driver skill was needed to control them. We live near Brands Hatch and when younger often went to watch the British Grand Prix.Brands Hatch was a very difficult circuit to master to.I do miss going there.

I didn't name anyone one person H. As I said there are so many sports and so many great sportsmen/women to choose from.I think
if you were into darts you would maybe pick Phil Taylor who has won 16 world championships. Maybe if your into snooker you could choose

The same as I don't know how to take a sentence out of a topic  and just quote that.Nothing is really explained to a newbie like me on how to do these things on here.I have looked at "A simple quide to using reply with quote" but it makes no sense to me at all.Maybe its because it was written 7 years ago.Or just maybe I'm just slow. I  apologize anyway.

  Comparing then and now personalities and events is unfair in some respects as things have

  changed so much. Footballs,boots,pitches, training,sports science ect.Formula 1 cars,tyres,

  circuits,electronics, ect. We have our favorite's from our generation but further down the

  line the next generation will say "who". I have my favorites but sport has changed beyond

Getting back to Highlander's original post....is Andy Britain's greatest sportsman?  Given that tennis is one on one (except for doubles before some smartarse steps in) and given that Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic all have the credentials to be considered the G.O.A.T, depending on preference,  the fact that Andy has been part of the elite 4 for a number of years is an achievement in itself.  He's worked hard to challenge the best his sport can offer.  He's inspired our youngsters, Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund to step up and improve their rankings.  They were playing on the Challenger and Futures Tours last year, now they have direct entry into all the majors and ATP events and something that Federer, Nadal and Djokovic can never emulate are the two back to back Olympic Gold Medals.
So yes, currently Andy Murray is by far and away this Nation's greatest sportsman and deservedly so.

That is the main reason I took a while to commit myself to an answer. Then I recall an interview I read with Jim Clark, where he praised Moss' ability.

If Jim Clark reckoned Moss was better who am I or anyone else to argue?

Moss would have won the 1958 Championship if he hadn't supported Mike Hawthorn's appeal against his disqualification from the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Being No. 1 in the world rankings and, at the same time, reigning Olympic Champion has to give Murray a ticket for the shortlist for current greatest UK sportsman. Of course, if it was all-time greatest the list would include Gareth Edwards. And Barry John. And JPR. And Gerald Davies. And the Pontrypool Front Row. And ... well just all of them.

For me, Jonny Wilkinson (despite Highlander's assertions that "team" sportsmen shouldn't be in there).

There is nothing about that man that does not command respect as the best we (Britain) have ever had.

New Zealand's Dan Carter pushes him close in terms of ability - maybe even better but as a New Zealander he's not qualified.

Jonny Wilkinson is dedicated, wholly professional, successful and a role model for all.

Andy Murray may well be (Hoy et al aside) Scotland's "greatest" sportsman.

Never Britain's greatest - "ABE" - (anyone but England) - being a great sportsman goes beyond being successful in your chosen sport.

It's Britain's greatest sportsman you're looking for - not the most successful in his chosen field.

If that was the case you need look no further than Phil Taylor.

      This little island of ours has produced some fantastic and heroic sportspeople and we should

        be justifiably proud of their achievements, and grateful for their sacrifices and dedication.

Well said that man !.

If I were to consider a member of a team there would be only one winner - Kenny Dalglish not just for his exploits on the field but for what he did at the time and since the Hillsborough disaster.

A thoroughly decent human being.

I don't think too many will have Paul Madeley down as their best ever sportsman.   ;)

Many Leeds United fans would and even more of his team mates from the 70's would too  :)

I love the fact that once Dunblane was known  for a very dark day and that is all people knew.  Now it is famous for Andy and his brother Jamie.  Good on them both.

So how many championships did he win?
I meant Stirling Moss since he was proposed as UK Greatest Sportsperson!

Seriously, best/greatest CURRENT UK sportsmen has to be Andy Murray, as he's currently at the pinnacle of his sport. A couple of years ago it would have to have been Rory McIlroy who was sitting happily as the World Number 1 in his sport.
The 'current' best/greatest will continually change.
How though do you judge it if we have 2 world number ones in 2 different sports? Is one better than the other because he's in one sport rather than another?
It's personal preference.
However, the greatest EVER, that's just opinion.
And even then I think I could only give an opinion PER SPORT

Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have, for the longest time, held the upper hand and up 'til now I think Murray has believed that his abilities are somewhat less than theirs.

Now he can wholly believe that he, at his best, can beat all of them.

He is not someone to whom I easily warm but gosh, does he deserve his success. A triumph of determination over natural ability.

As good as the latter half of 2016 has been, 2017 could be even more successful for him.

Lendl should be given great credit for making him believe.

As Andrew Castle commented during the final game of Wimbledon 2013 "Sporting immortality doesn't come easy"

...and to achieve it being successful, even harder.

No "Eddie the Eagle", "Eric the Eel" or "Cool Runnings" for glorious failure.

Huge success, wholly earned.

....and of course, not that short on natural ability, John - but not in Federer's league.

Apparently Andy Murray posted Rudyard Kipling classic poem IF on his Instagram Account two weeks ago.

What a great poem it is

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Part of that on the wall of the players' entrance to Wimbledon (triumph and disaster bit)

Wonderful, wonderful words.

Father gave it to me (in a frame) many, many moons ago.

If only I were that good....
