Andy Murray is Number One

OK his opponent withdrew and had didn't have to play but what a fantastic achievement from the boy from Dunblane.

Does being number one make him Britain's greatest sportsman - I think it might.

Nobody in particular springs to mind at the moment. However, Murray may be very good, but I don't think he's the greatest.

Do you mean current sportsman or greatest ever? Not that Murray would get there on either count in my book. I'll have a think about it for the greatest ever British sportsman.

My candidates would include  Mo Farah, Steve Redgrave and Chris Hoy.

Britain has a history of great cyclists, great athletes, great rowers, so to excel in a sport where we have not been great for  over 70 odd years and in the toughest era ever, then yes Andy Murray deserves all the accolades coming his way.  Despite what some might see as petulant behaviour when he's struggling in a match, it is rarely directed at his opponent, in fact I think he's one of the most honest and least arrogant sportsmen I've ever heard interviewed.
Had ranking points been awarded at the Rio Olympics (as they were at London 2012) Andy would already have been No 1 in the world, so fair play to him for the hard work he has put in this year.  If he does well at the end of year championships I can see him picking up SPOTY for the third consecutive year.

How can being rated No I make him Britain's greatest sportsman. It is just one sport, tennis. And how long will he be No1 for. Not long I fear.
Good achievement I agree. But no, It doesn't make him  Britain's greatest sportsman. Not in my eyes anyway.Far to many others have got an argument to be that.

Being no1 in tennis is a fact

Being the best sportsman overall is up for opinion

Discussion forum etc
