Title: Window Vents
Post by: arbitro3493 on November 18, 2018, 19:07:55 PM
For those who have holiday apartments/villas that are just used a few times a year, has anyone been able to have vents fitted to the windows for “airing” the place out when your no your not there. Similar to what we have in the uk. I am not sure if this is a thing out there? Is it something you could add to already fitted windows?

Cheers

We don't have window vents as such but small circular vents beneath the windows in each room.
They're maybe three or four inches in diameter and work a treat.
Basically we bought the vents from Yapi market, chiselled out the wall, filled with old mozzie nets and added the covers both inside and out.

I did make enquiries about "trickle vents" (The posh name for vents fitted to windows ) some years back - but it seems they are not a concept that has been embraced in Turkey.

They are quite easy to fit ( if you have easy access to the outside of the window ) so they would be yet another item "to bring from England".

They do not provide a massive capacity for "air changes " and an air vent in the wall will always be more effective.

Another thing to consider that if you provide a route for the air to escape it will always be more effective if there is also a route for it to enter. A vent at high level AND low level would always be preferable.

I'd recommend that you go the "airbrick path" rather than trying to fit something to windows.

We had a problem with condensation in our house in Kaya. I fitted airbricks top and bottom in a few rooms and it cured it almost immediately.

Do people envisage there would be much of a problem if you didn’t add vents or an air brick? As I mentioned we would be visiting every 6/8 weeks for a couple of weeks at a time and at one period for a couple of months. We had planned obvisouly to make sure the place was well vented whilst we were staying there, leaving doors open whilst away and running a dehumidifier before leaving. I had read people suggested putting bowls of salt down or those little boxes that collect moisture also?

Any people’s thoughts/experiences to that would be helpful. I appreciate your responses already.

We had probs few years ago re my clothes in wardrobe i leave here got horrid yellowy spots on and some others developed like bleach marks so now we leave all wardrobe doors open when we leave, we buy the hanging dehumidifiers in wardrobes and the plastic ones in each room, also leave our bathroom window open all the time now and the prob has improved hugely...

I remember a member suggested sealing the windows inside and outside with a sealant they bought from the UK. It may have been unibond or similarl.

Anyone had experience with this or suggestions on what to use

That would have been to seal ill fitted windows from leaks. If anything, sealing around windows would make air circulation problems even worse.

If you close up fully while you are away without air bricks etc you will almost definitely have problems - that is all part and parcel of the construction style and climate.

Leave all internal doors open and have open WC/bathroom windows  (with security metalwork fitted) as an absolute minimum.

Agree completely ^^^^ Get some window locks off ebay and fit them to all windows. Lock the windows slightly ajar (5mm). Never had a problem since doing this.

How would you stand with your insurance company if you had a break in while you were away and they got in through a window that was slightly open even though locked.
I only ask because when we had our windows replaced here years ago we were shown the vents and locks (and they are left like that pretty much all the time when we're at home) but told never to leave them open on the vent when we go away because insurance companies wouldn't pay out.  How true that is I don't know, if may just depend on the insurers.
Just a thought  ???

Oh, don't worry. Insurers will search for ANY excuse not to pay out.
