Title: Gemiler Beach Cafe - Rip Off !
Post by: Rimms on April 18, 2014, 13:36:41 PM
I know it's been pointed out on several occasions here about being ripped off at Gemiler beach cafe, I thought that after all of the bad publicity the trader in question would have ceased, well, not at all, they got us today.

Visiting with friends, we ordered four coffee, during the smallest cup of coffee ever served, they came over and offered we try pancakes, my mate ordered a cheese one and myself a lemon sugar, they then brought out a side plate of salad and a few chips. The bill came and it was 80 TL !

The break down was :

Coffee 5tl each
Chips 15tl
Salad 15tl
Pancakes 15tl each

We refused to pay and while complaining the waitress told us to "shut up" she came back with another bill for 60tl and loudly announced "Good Price"

Never again.

The restaurant is the one on the right hand side, beach level run by all Turkish women.

They probably don't see the remarks on CBF or facebook George, so carry on regardless.

If they could get their act together, clean the place up a bit and provide good services at a reasonable price, those women would be on e real winner. As it is theyre making Gemiler a place to avoid.

Was the café on the left closed ? Always found them to be fairly reasonable unlike their competitors on the right hand side as I guess you have experienced.

Yes it was closed, although I think it's open each weekend

The one on the left will probably be open full-time again after May Day.

Was so disappointed with the place the one and only time I went.

Do not see the attraction to the place. Been twice, and the beach was filthy on both occasions, the sea covered in an oil film, from the speedboats, and cafe owners, tried to rip us off both times. Have no inclination whatsoever to return to see if things have changed, much better places to visit.

The best time to go there is on a sunny winter's day and take a picnic.

The cafe on the left has closed and the tables have been removed. it was run by the old Kaya Muktar but when he lost the recent election he was told to remove the tables. The boys were also told not to give water to the locals. it all boils down to local politics.

So it's wait and see what happens.

True, but the one thing we (and they) will never know is how much busier they would be if it weren't for CBF, Facebook and similar. I'd like to think they have lost thousands of pounds worth of custom. The only thing we can do is put the information out there.

We had the same thing last year we moored there in a speed boat, we ordered without checking the prices, and was astonished with the bill! I can't remember if it was June or September but it was empty, when she told us the price I realised why! Like many others I won't be giving them any more custom

Happened to Jav and I a few days ago at Gemiler.

Never heard of the rip off tactics before but sure as hell we were ripped off. 2 coffees 2 soft drinks and a chicken kebab (which I fed to the local dog) 65 lira.
Such a nice spot but so much litter. Definitely a picnic place and not a place to buy from.

Said we would never go again.  >:(

Went to Patara beach for the first time the other day and thought that was lovely. Beach was spotless and all sand! The beach shack cafe had normal prices. Will definitely be returning.

Take the dolmus from Hisaronu that goes to Kaykoya. Stay on the dolmus till the end. You have to pay to virtually get off the bus at this point. Don't sit on a sun bed, eat or drink anything that you haven't brought with you. Those women can be fairly aggressive. My advice, get off at the ghost town, and enjoy.

We've exposed many a scam here on CBF and it has affected those trying to rip our members off greatly in some cases. This operation is the exception, we've been writing about it for years, and still they are there, still ripping people off.

This was the main reason I set CBF up, so us trusting Brits/Europeans can pool information on the good - and the bad. I sugeest we "redouble our efforts" on this one - post in any Facebook group that may be relevant, make it a sentence in every Fethiye reply on Tripadvisor, use it when a lull in a conversation comes when talking to newly found folk when over there.

The reason I suspect they have ridden this since what...2006...is that falling popularity is being compensated for with incredible profit levels from those still falling victim. It's bad for tourists, it's bad for our area and it's bad for all the honest good guys in Turkey.

Surely it must be worth bringing this to the attention of the local Muhtar? After all, many businesses in Kaya are working so hard to develop it as an arts and culture location. Whether through it's history or art and literature, there are many things on offer in Kaya that isn't available elsewhere. In my opinion, these women are destroying what others are striving to create. Very quickly a message saying "stay away from Gemiler" can be created which will have an inevitable knock on effect to Kaya. The reality is that both of these are wonderful locations that don't need this bunch of thieves.

I think you'll find that the newly elected Kaya Muhtar is well aware of the "Gemiler Scam" and it's effect on the area. Whether or not he is inclined, or even able, to do anything about it is another matter. Unfortunately the people running the site in question are still very influential in the area as they are closely related to a former Muhtar. There have been several visits to the site over the years by the Jandarma who have ended up doing nothing after spending quite a long time there, investigating complaints and "taking refreshments".   ;)

I agree with the fact that this needs bringing to everyones attention. The shame is that there are two places at Gemiler. I have a friend who loves Gemiler and goes every week. The Cafe on the left as you arrive is NOT a rip off place. It is run by a great guy and prices are what you would expect.

The cafe on the left was run by the outgoing muktar and has now closed. I'm going to Gemiler this afternoon and will try and find out what the latest info is if any.

Is it worth raising it with the mayor at the next meeting, explaining how long it's gone on for
and the effect it's having on the areas reputation. Perhaps even a petition. Perhaps a photo
or map pointing out the place to avoid.?

This would be a terrible shame if the business on the left was affected by boycotting the beach... They are really nice people and have worked really hard.. My understanding is that they will be back....

It was fairly quiet at Gemiler this afternoon, a few cars all locals.

The left hand cafe is closed and all the furniture is stacked away but IMO it would not take long to get it up and running again. The gate is not manned so there is no charge at present for the car park.

There are another two small cafes open but not doing any business. I spoke to the ladies running one of them and they were not happy at the criticism I leveled at them. I explained about the bad press they were getting on facebook and the CBF. They did not deny that their prices high and a rip off. I also pointed out their displayed menu should show the prices. As somebody has already suggested why not get the mayor of Fethiye involved as he now has jurisdiction over Gemiler.

The Hisaronu dolmus is still on the winter schedule and only goes as far as Kenali which is just beyond Kaya. The Dolmus does go onto Gemiler in the high season but only 3/4 times a day.

I would suggest if you want to visit Gemiler which is well worth a visit go by car. Head for Kayakoy and just follow the signs.

For those of you with stamina and a head for heights, it's well worth stopping off at Af Kule Monastery if you're going to Gemiler.

I visited the beach two weeks ago and the place on the left was open and to be fair, the guys serving were nice and polite and the prices were reasonable. I agree that the place needs to be cleaned up, the beach was messy and littered with rubbish etc, shame really as it is s a beautiful place. 8)
