Title: Mugged and beaten up in Uzumlu
Post by: Don on September 24, 2014, 15:45:23 PM
PLEASE READ AND BEWARE

We have been property owners in Uzumlu for the past 14 years. We have seen the Village grow into a thriving community of Turkish and ex pats. We have seen and supported local businesses become established in their success.
Unfortunately we have a very shocking experience that happened to our Daughter and her boyfriend to report to you all. We wish everyone to be very aware of the true facts and ensure that it does not happen to any members of your family or friends.
On Sunday 14th Sept Our daughter and her boyfriend  went for a meal at a very well known bar and restaurant in the centre of Uzumlu village. This was the  5th meal they had at the restaurant during their 2 week stay and the owner has known all of our family for over 10 years now. A great steak was eaten by both of them and they had a really nice evening together. After their meal the owner joined them in the seating area with a friend of his who owns another style of take away business within the village. They had a great time chatting, having drinks, learning some Turkish and generally playing music.
Moods started to change and our Daughter could feel tension brewing between the men so she said to her boyfriend it was time to go home.
They left the restaurant and had only walked several paces when they turned and heard the owner running towards them shouting abuse with a large brick/stone in his hand. His friend managed to hold him back and our daughter shouted what on earth are you doing the look in the eyes of the owner was one of pure hatred and
he said he was going to kill her boyfriend,  both her and her boyfriend were in total shock at the outburst and were also uneasy and worried about walking home.
They continued to walk back to our Villa on the lane passing (Paradise Garden Villa with the white wall)  Then they heard a car and being as it was approx. 3am they began to worry.
Our daughter was told to hide behind a wall and her boyfriend ran and lay flat in the shadows of waste land at side of the road.
The car passed with no headlights and he could see it was the owner of the bar and some friends. The car continued to drive away so they both stood up and went to continue home to be shocked that the car had stopped suddenly and started to reverse. Our daughter instantly hid behind the wall again but in a split second the Owner got out of the car and ran and hit her boyfriend with what they believe was a thick piece of wood or baseball bat, all that our Daughter could hear was her boyfriend shouting the owners name and then the thuds as he was battered across the back of his head causing a gash that needed 12 stiches, the friends then joined in kicking and stripping him of his shorts,  which had his wallet containing 350TL, £140 credit cards and driving licence and iphone.  She was totally petrified but afraid to shout out for what might then happen to her, the car drove off very fast and she could hear it screeching around the village for a long time.  She felt as if she was in a horrific movie.
She was then on her own no boyfriend to be seen not knowing if her boyfriend had been taken or managed to get away or even if he was alive. She ran over gardens, fields through barbed wire to keep off the main lanes until she eventually made it back to our Villa.  She was banging on the front door in hope that her boyfriend had made it back and luckily he had, he had kept the villa lights off so that nobody knew he was there. He had in a split second when the men turned away  managed to drag himself to his feet and run for his life. When our daughter got in to the Villa he was petrified as was she and his head was pouring in blood and he was in a really bad way. Not knowing what to do next they rang on our neighbours bell and then the Jandarma were called which then led to another major nightmare of events.
The Jandarma took them both to the Jandarma Station followed by our neighbours.
They were asked to sit in a very small room and who should then enter the room but the Owner and then the Owners dad joined them who owns a well known shop within the village. They were offered money by the Owners Dad if they would not press charges. As the Owner already has 3 other charges against him.
However, they did press charges and a translator was called to take the statements. The Jandarma then escorted them to the hospital for x rays and several stitches to her boyfriends head. Our Neighbours also attended all of this.
We are not sure what the outcome will be as our Daughter does not think the statements were written in Turkish word for word. We do have copies and they will be getting them translated.
Please just be aware we are just a quiet family feeling extremely distraught to even write this post. Nobody had been out of order that night our Daughter is 24 and her boyfriend 36. They are not drunken louts they were just enjoying what was their last evening of their holiday and this was the result of that.
We know that cover up stories are being brandished around but this is the truth and you we genuinely think you all have the right to know.

What a disgraceful way to behave. I hope that your daughter and Boyfriend are recovering from their nightmare and that a successful prosecution takes place.

It would be useful, in the fullness of time, to name and shame the venues involved so that we can give them a wide berth.

Yes he sounds a bit of a freak, you should name and shame him, when you feel its safe to do so,
Hope you daughter and boyfriend get over their ordeal,

I agree with apollo and davybill - many of us don't know the restaurants in Uzumlu (I certainly don't) and I hope in time you can share the name etc so others can make a balanced decision on whether to risk this place.

Also Don this is a very courageous thing to share. Most of those who work like this do so on the basis that people will keep it to themselves and thus they continue to get away with it. You did well Don. Best wishes to your daughter and her boyfriend, nobody in the World deserves this to happen to them.

Thanks Guys, I might name and shame later, but the way I have described him most people in Uzumlu would be able to work out who he is so if you have friends there you can ask them.

OMG! this is awful i hope they get over this very very quickly, i'm now very wary about buying a property in this little village, now i have to rethink, how sad as i have fallen in love with a house there...

Don,  I am sickened and saddened to read this post, please send my best wishes to your daughter and her boyfriend.  We have walked back through the village at all hours and have always felt relatively comfortable and it is scary to think that there are people out there, that we know, capable of doing this to two innocent people just having fun on their holiday.  You are quite right in saying that those of us who know the village will know who you are talking about and I totally respect your decision not to name and shame at this point.  I hope your family are able to got over this and continue to enjoy the village in the future - it does certainly make you sit up and think.   :(

Everybody in the village will know who it is and a lot of people out of the village will know, he has a history but people still support him, maybe now is the time to stop.

Thanks for your post Don, people do need to be aware of this, it should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet. What a terrible shame for one person to tarnish the reputation of such a beautiful village. I lived in Uzumlu for a short while last year, and I know who you are talking about, as will most people. I hope justice is served upon this young man, and he is not allowed to continue like this. In my mind he has got away with far too much in the past and deserves to be locked up.
I hope your daughter and her boyfriend recover from their injuries both physical and mental, from what must have been a terrifying ordeal. Certainly not what you expect from a small rural village in Turkey.

So sorry to read this, hope they are both home safe now and recovering.
Similar to the Taxi incident in Ovacik. Two "men" with a known history.      Disgusting.

Stop supporting a business who chase after people in a gang, beat them with a baseball bat and steal their money, possessions and clothes?

It's a no brainer, surely?

"Everyone in the village will know who it is" - but sounds like plenty of them still go??? Where is the solidarity amongst Brits to stand shoulder to shoulder with their own who have been wronged!!! Why would anyone choose to give their hard earned money to this place - honestly Uzumlu people, you need to wake up - you are going to relax in a place of danger - next time it could be you, or your daughter, or mother.

FFS go somewhere else to eat.

This thread has reminded about a bit of an incident as had with his dad when I lived up there. I bought some spices one day from his shop, I only wanted coriander but he hadn't got any and so he sold me a gift set of 8 including the coriander for 20 TL. When I got home I realised they were 4 years out if date so I walked back up to the village and asked him for a refund. The result of that was a 10 minute argument in his shop where he refused to refund me any money, threw the stuff on the floor, ripped it all open in disgust and told me he wouldn't be able to resell it. He even opened one of the packets and tasted it and told me there was no problem. I refused to leave the shop without my 20 TL and in the end he opened the till took out a 20 TL note and threw it on the floor. I never frequented his shop again, seems like - "Like father like son"

so sorry that the reputation of Uzumlu has been sullied by one  deranged thug. I hope that your daughter and her boyfriend recover from this nasty experience. I for one never frequent that bar as it is well known that there have been a number of similar incidents involving visitors.

We have lived in Uzumlu for 3 years, this blokes reputation goes before him so forewarned is forearmed.  We have never frequented his establishment and never will. Surely now people will see sense and avoid the place like the plague.

Quite agree with you Cobbydalers but how does one get this across to the many tourists who rent in the village during the summer and who make the place look popular!!!!

Well if I discover which restaurant/shop it is, they will not see any of my money, or indeed me..... I shall ask around so I do not make the mistake of going there.  In the mean time Don I hope your daughter's boyfriend makes a full recovery, and that the scrot and his mates are locked up for a long time.

And I guess one of their first ports of call for tourists staying in the village is the shop? Good for local info and of course recommendations... :(

This sounds like a scene from a horror drama. What power have they got, that they can act like thugs and keep getting away with it, or is it brown envelopes.  Your poor daughter and boyfriend, they must have been scared witless.  Awful for you too, you have lived there all this time and felt safe.  Here's hoping that they wont be scarred for life and they lock him up, throw away the key and their business fails.

Thinking about this a lot tonight. What makes it even worse is this is not a flashpoint moment of local temper, it was a wholly premeditated planned attack on two people just trying to enjoy their holiday. Appalling.

It certainly sounds like it.

Lets hope that when this establishment is finally "named and shamed" this thread is read by as many potential visitors to Uzumlu as possible.

without naming and shaming, I would highly recommend the following establishments for a safe and enjoyable evening out;- The Grape Garden, The Winehouse, Selale, Cadianda (Mustafas) Camlik, Fesettas, the small cafe in the square, and for shopping Ramazans in the square (he stocks lots of English brands) the small corner shops where service is always polite and honest. Hope the couple are recovering well both physically and psychologically.

I'm told that theft of property warrants a heavier penalty than aggravated assault under present Turkish law - could be a double whammy to look forward to.

We are truly overwhelmed at the response we have received. Alot of you have put two and two together and come up with the right answer. So now we sit and wait to see what the the system does about it.
And I would like to ask the local ex-pat community to boycott the bar and hurt him in his pocket !
Thank you once again

The Hornet

Having two identities on CBF is against the rules. I have removed the posts, and replies directly to them.

If you want to repost them, please avoid naming the restaurant (as we respectfully asked from the start), and post them under your 'normal' CBF user name, not the one you set up today.

No  :)

Normally I would but CBF has managed to keep out of the Us v Them civil war that is Uzumlu for all of it's 11 year history. This topic should be kept as intended, to inform people of an awful event. It is important it doesn't degenerate into another Uzumlu tribal punch up.

11 years has also taught me that things posted by 'anonymous' people are absolutely worthless in the big scheme of things.
